Goodyear Heights Ohio Homes Have a Rich History

 Go Go Goodyear

Very similar to my previous post on Firestone Park Ohio Homes, this story involves our neighbors to the east, Goodyear Heights Ohio Homes and their rich history.

In my opinion, these are two of the most interesting stories in Akron Ohio homes and our neighborhoods history. Two of the most famous corporations in the United States and they started in our own Akron Ohio! Frank Seiberling, Goodyear's founder, was very similar to Harvey Firestone, in that he had a vision for his new company in the early 1900's. Like Harvey, he worried about his workforce and retention, due to excessive travel. He also opted to purchase a huge block of land to build homes for his workers. The Board of Goodyear would not agree, so Frank bought the land himself and hired his personal landscape architect to design the area. It was further from the plant, about a half mile, but it was close enough to walk to work in those days. Mission accomplished!

The Goodyear Heights homes were very similar to the Firestone Park homes, naturally. Capes, Colonials, and brick ranches dominated. The neighborhood is still very well maintained and on top of Brittain Road, you have a great view of Goodyear's famous airdock where the blimps were built. This is one of Akron's endearing landmarks and is very close to Goodyear Heights homes.

Goodyear Airdock for the BlimpsHuge Interior of Goodyear Airdock

I was fortunate enough to see the gigantic interior when President Clinton gave a speech there in front of one of our Blimps, what a site. The blimp workers said it actually rained inside the Airdock because clouds formed near the ceiling. True story!

Like Firestone Park homes, Goodyear Heights homes are blessed with a Metro park in its center. Great place for hiking, picnicking and just hanging out with the family.

Goodyear Heights Metro Park , opened in 1930 after the land was donated by Akron's Goodyear and the park district purchased 37 acres from a local farmer. In the 1950s, the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company donated more land. It is still a very well maintained and a beautiful park to visit. It is usually packed with family's from Goodyear Heights homes in the area.

We, who own Akron Ohio homes are so fortunate to have had two visionary men, not only prosper, but look ahead for our futures. I wonder if they knew their hard work would persevere and give so many generations a wonderful place to live and grow up. I am very grateful!

I love reading your neighborhood posts.  I did not learn much Akron history when I lived there which is a shame.
