A Photo Summary of a Memorable Hiking Trip

By
Education & Training

Hiking is one of the activities that I always enjoy.   It's good exercise, it does not hurt the pocket book and there are plenty of good sightseeing along the way if you pay attention to the details.

As a former actuary, I know I have a great eye for detail (too many of analysis and number crunching if you ask me).

On my latest hiking trip on the Red Lodge Creek hiking trail in Luther (15 miles northwest of Red Lodge), I decided to bring my camera and share some of the beautiful things I encountered along the way.

Without any further wait, here is the summary of the details that drew my attention along the trail.  Enjoy the virtual hiking tour!

These pictures are beautiful Gerry. Very relaxing and peaceful. And to think HE could have chosen to make in all in black and white

Bryant,

Thanks.  I actually did one of them in black and white but did not find the energy to do it for the other 13 photos.  Some photos were only worthy to be displayed due to vibrant colors in them.   Here is the only one in B&W just for you.

OOOOhhh! The first one in the series, do you know what it is? I think it is a less mature version of the one in my blogpost, top left corner! I have searched all six of my wildflower identification books, scoured the internet, and cannot find it! I believe it is a trillium, of some variety, but cannot confirm. All beautiful shots, and I particularly like the little balloony white flowers...off to look them up! (Nice choice for the b&w photo!)

Hi Gerry, these photos are simply gorgeous.  I recognize many of the flowers as the same ones I see here.  I especially liked the dandelion and the waterfall - fantastic!  Thanks for going on a hike and bringing those back!

Cheryl,

I will admit that I posted the flower photos without knowing all their names.  Thanks for the info on the trillium.  I revisited your post with the trillium to refresh my mind.  Oooh yes, I now recognize it and I won<t forget the name.  I can see why they called it trillium (3 petals, 3 evenly distributed partitions).  If your research yields the names ot the other flowers, please do share.

I also like the "little balloony white flowers".  That was the only one I saw along the route but it sure captivated my attention. I am glad I got to photograph it and eager to find out if you can come up with its real name.

Buying a good Montana wildflower identification book is on my list of books to buy.

Mary,

You are welcome.  I am happy to be sharing these beautiful flowers with you (both online and as another "red" thing).  You probably realized the water fall on the 10th picture as being the one I also captured through the different perspective.

Sylvie,

You are welcome.  I got this great hiking book called "Day Hikes in the Beartooth Mountains" and I plan to use it many more times before the end of the summer.  Don't worry, I will make to bring my camera for those great photo opportunities!  If you liked this virtual hiking tour, you should check this earlier post of mine with a slide show of a slightly more difficult hike: Hiking on the Meeteetse Trail

Debra,

Thank you for visitng this post and for the "wow".  It sure was a nice and easy (a short trail which was mainly on a flat surface) hiking trip.  I will likely go on a more challenging hiking trip next.

Hello Gerry, I felt like I was right there hiking along with you because of the fantastic photos you posted here. You've included quite a few of my favorite things, mushrooms & moss! Love that dandelion photo, it sure brings back lots of great memories, thanks!

That bright blue flora in your last photo looks like it could be a type of delphinium. I grew it last year but it never came back this year :(  The photo before that w/ the purple pointy slim petals looks like Aster. Now that did come back but  something is munching on it so it never gets to bud. Oh well there's always next spring!

Cynthia,

You are such a joy to read comments from and I want to thank you for being a regular visitor to my posts.  I am glad you could join me on this virtual hiking tour.  Thank you as well for identifying most of the remaining flowers.  I am glad you appreciated the mushroom and moss combo (I am throwing an additional photo from a different angle just for you).  It was a short hike but as mentioned in my post, one with plenty of interesting sights along the way!  My camera sure came in handy.  :)

Great pictures. My only comment would be to put them in a slide show so that one doesn't have to do so much scrolling. Check out slide.com, which is where I do my slide shows.

Gerry,

I am amazed at the beauty that comes out of the dirt. Although short lived, it fullfills it's potential. Each plant and flower is unique in color, size, scent and beauty.

Thank you for showing me flowers I've never seen before! :)
