By the way... the Preamble to the Constitution contains the following words:  "promote the general welfare."  Do we just delete that, and pretend it never existed ?

That's a better argument, Karen.  The answer is that it never left the Constitution but is sandwiched in between two qualifying statements:

provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity

I think The Framers interpretation of "promote the general welfare" was more in line with those qualifiers than the way the Progressives have bastardized that interpretation it with their implementation of the Spending Package looting of the Treasury

I am sure that many of the things written by our forefathers, were not intended to be taken in the context that they have been,  What's new?  It's called politics.  Social Securiity is a mess because they gave it to people who never worked for it.  It was intended for retirees. 

The US Congress is up for re-election next year.  Vote all new people in and hope that they can do a better job.

I guess a lot of the founding fathers would be in jail today if liberals had their way.  We have strayed so far from the basics our country were founded on.  Itwas never intended that America become a welfare state with free retirement, health-care, and allowing the politicians to buy their way into office with freebies like this for their constituents.

Karen Anne, we tried that in education and it didn't work.  Here's why:  If all the A students work hard, and have to reduce their grades to Bs to accomodate the C students (who didnt work hard), the A students will just stop doing their home work.
