Frisco Allowed to Water Twice a Week

Yesterday I posted my thoughts on why Frisco should keep it's very modest water restrictions.  Well, the City Council voted against me last night and decided to relax these important restrictions.  Frisco residents will no longer have to water their yards just once a week. Water Conservation Frisco Texas

In fact I've been watering 2-3 times a week all spring.  In May, I watered every day for 8 days in a row!  And I haven't turned my sprinkler system on yet.  It's called rainfall and fortunately it has been plentiful in North Texas this year.  My grass is as green as my "sprinkling" neighbors, my foundation is fine and my water bill is relatively low.

If you read my blog regularly you know I always boast about my cities of Frisco and Celina.  I love our city government and how well they are dealing with our unprecedented growth.  So instead of turning the tone of this post negative I'll share something positive that came from the Council last night.

Frisco has done extensive research into a new device called an ETC -- it stands for evapotranspiration controller.  Residents will be able to water whenever they want, if they install this special device.  It's a sensor that hooks up to your sprinkler system and measures weather patterns, humidity, and soil moisture. "It calculates how much water is being lost to the atmosphere, and then it basically tells the unit when to come on and replace that moisture," said city public works director Gary Hartwell. Frisco Water Wise

Frisco leaders are so sold on this technology, they're offering a $100 rebate to residents who purchase and install one of eight approved brands. The ET controllers sell for between $400 and $1000 each.  While I won't be rushing out to purchase one, I will start reading up on them.  And maybe when our next dryspell hits I'll rely on technology rather than Mother Nature.

What are your thoughts?

Where can I find more information on ET controllers?

Lifting the restrictions now just mean that rationing will start earlier this year.

I have yet to water this year......

I'm just like you Tom.  I fear people will now start watering 2x a week because the city says so.  I hope everyone's common sense prevails.  Thanks for stopping by.

I have not turned my sprinklers on once this year either.  Laxing the rules was just plain STUPID!!!  Denton did it as well...  I'm already starting to see mushrooms in people's yards because of the over watering.

More details on when Frisco can water:

Beginning July 1, Frisco residents with even-numbered addresses will be allowed to water Tuesdays and Saturdays. Those with odd-numbered addresses will be allowed to water Thursdays and Sundays. Nonresidential water customers will water Mondays and Fridays.

Watering in Frisco will still be prohibited between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. every day.

Tina - we have water restriction here and I agree - we need to start conserving, utilize xeriscape and plant more drought tolerant plants.  Enjoyed your post!

I have mixed feelings. I watched a few of my  neighbors water 3-4 times in the same day.  I suspect they were using a weeks worth in one day.  Really defeats the purpose..

In Las Vegas you can only water on certain days at certain times to avoid a fine.  There are also plans that the Southern Nevada Water Authority will give rebates to homeowners to redo their landscaping and removing grass to include drought resistant plants.  I think it's a good idea.  Nothing wrong with conserving.  By the way, I LOVE FRISCO!!!!!  It's gorgeous!

Meg thanks for stopping by.  Frisco offers a service for a trained irrigation specialist to come to your home & set up an irrigation schedule on your sprinkler system.  Last summer this was a free service so I bet it still is.  Maybe your neighbors would benefit :)

Christin - I love how Nevada and many other southwestern states embrace the natural surroundings for landscape.  I don't understand why so many builders / communities / homeowners feel the need to cover every inch with grass.  Frisco has hosted workshops on xeriscaping, but the concept has not caught on here yet.

Thanks for stopping by and giving me another idea for a post!

Tina - I am glad we do not have to worry about this in Indiana, but have lived in cities where they do. I think people often forget what a resource water is.

Tina, we have had that a few times, but now I am on well water so it never happens. They encourage people to only water twice a week.
