Are you #1 on Google. Ok ... Are you sure about that?

I'd just like to bring one thing about Google searches to your attention that I have not seen blogged here.

I'm lucky to own "MovingtoTheCountry.ca" and I do get a regular flow of contacts from it. If you are in Ontario, Canada, it's a pretty sure bet that if you search for information about "moving to the country" on Google, even if you have the bubble filled in for "Search the Web" - rather than "Search Pages from Canada", this site will come up ranked as #1 on Google.

Great. Wow! Here I am searching the whole web and I am number 1, right???

Not so right ... and not so fast.

I have had a friend in England do a search for "moving to the country" and I don't even come up on the first page.

Why is that?

It looks like Google gives a higher ranking to local results. So if you have a domain name like "greatproperties.com" (I haven't checked that one, but I'm sure it's taken), and you type in "great properties" in a Google search, you may get results that show your site as number one (or you may not, and we all know about those other nasty SEO factors). If you do, my guess is that you are still only getting that ranking locally, not all across the web.

So, here's some advice.

Tie your domains to your location.

People who are looking for property in Trenton, Ontario are most likely to search for "real estate trenton ontario". If they leave out the Ontario part, they will, of course, get lots of results for Trenton, New Jersey and have to try again. If you are in Trenton, Ontario and you expect them to find you using a generic title like "wonderfulplaces.com", though, you might be waiting a long time.

In most cases this will not make a difference to your business because you really want the local results, and the opposite problem can occur - with my generic title about "moving to the country" I have been getting inquiries  from Europe and other places where people have not even worked out if they could migrate here - but that can be a good thing too.

So, are you #1 on Google? Maybe yes, Maybe no. It's more likely if your post or domain name are linked to a specific location.

Just a hint.

I know Google is very fickle...we won't go into comparisons here. But, staying in the limelight can be very brief and local.  There are just too many tiers, layers, etc. to stay top dog for very long.

Thanks, Liz, Edward and Don.

I think any information about Google needs to have a date stamp, because thing change quickly. From a more postive perspective, it's amazing that they can factor so many things into searches that take place in a fraction of a second, isn't it?

There's a city in Texas called Donna so I get some hits for Donna Homes, with my website being donnahomes.com, but it's surprisingly a very small number from Donna looking for houses.

Good advice I think.

I live in Columbus Ohio so I put Columbus in my first blogs name back in 2005 & 2nd & 3rd blogs names... wait they were all named the exact same thing 2 & 3 were abandoned in a couple of weeks... I joined ActiveRain in 2006 as "Columbus OH" for a reason.  I named my 5th blog the same thing (as 1,2,3)  in early 2007 and gave #1 a new name then later gave that name to my first ActiveRain Outside blog adding OH to it because I understand my blogs show up well in searches in Columbus GA too....and because DiscoverColumbus.com was gone by then and another agent in my market was using DiscoverColumbus on a blogger blog.

When I started a 2nd AR Outside blog I used "Worthington" in the title.  Hallelujah... the north side of Columbus really does not have an identifiable name and although I have tried to stay local I hear from people who want to buy a house out in the boonies.   My office is in Worthington.

I know the Google search I see is NOT necessarily the same  as the Google search that others see....  not sure I knew about local results being important.

Very interesting, Bob.  I did see something about that, but I've never had a chance to follow-up.  You've just given me a little shove to try it out for myself.  .

Someone else discovered this when they went on vacation far, far away. They were proudly showing their friends how they were #1 on Google. Nowhere to be found. They were shocked and disappointed. Those old cookies on our computers tell Google and Microsoft more than we think.
