Moose in Red Lodge

This is probably one of the best moose pictures taken in Red Lodge that I have and it is not me who took it!

It was my brother and my nieces who got to admire this scene during their first visit to Red Lodge while on a little hike. My younger niece Karine was the one who pointed the moose to my brother and he was lucky enough to capture this scene from a distance and from high up (a safe zone to be) looking over the West Fork of Rock Creek just South of Red Lodge. He got many photos of the mother and calf but the following is the one that I liked the best and the one I chose to share on here, on my first Montana Moose Monday post.

Wow, so cool!  My husband always wants to see a moose...we're always looking when we're in New Hampshire!

Sincerely,

Kathleen,

I find that when I am not looking that there is a better chance to see them.   I hope you and your husband see one or more soon.  They are bigger in person and you want to make sure you are in your car or at least 25 yards away from them.

Hi Gerry,  This is a great photo, and such a cute little baby moose, too!  We have many moose up here, yet I always find myself saying " I want to see one!"  I get "moose reports" from others, about where they were, and where they saw them, but I'm never in the right place at the right time, I guess.  Thanks for posting your first Moose Monday - it's very very cool!

Gerry, They look so domestic. Are they really as mean or protective as we hear?

Mary,

I am happy to see you here.   I am glad you liked mommy moose with little baby moose.   It is only a matter of time before you see one.   You are due to see and photograph one!  I have been seeing moose at a rate of about one every 6 months here in Red Lodge.  Sure enough my brother and nieces come to visit me and they have two different sightings of moose within 10 days.  Talk about beeing very lucky!

Cool Moose Mondays - count me in.  My uncle currently lives in Kalispell.  I've never seen a moose outside the zoo & I know you don't mess with them.

Paul,

Don't let their beauty fool you.  They do have a though character and are very protective!   You do not want to stand anywhere near them and if you ever encounter one by surprise, make sure there is something between you and them.

Richard,

I can imagine that they were probably some before in your area but they must have moved to the less populated areas of the country.  Thanks for dropping by to comment.

Gerry this is great photo!  I ran across a Mamma Moose standing in the middle of the road on Bear Tooth Pass several years ago.  She wouldn't move so we just waited in the car (pouring down rain that day).  Several minutes went by and then along came - 2 babies - Momma waited until they crossed the road and then she followed them.  I didn't have the camera available - bummer.  It was one of those moments I'll never foget.  Magical!

Anna,

Thnak you for the positive feedback amd sharing your magical moment with us.  I can visualize it in my head thanks to your words and description.  When it is that magical, you don't need any photos to remember the moment.  :)

OMGosh! What an adorable little one! We have some (few) moose in Colorado - I have never seen one in the wild. I loved Anna's story, too!

That is one adorable baby!  I have seen one in the wild here in CO, and many in the wild, (and on the street and on campus!) in Alaska! You are so right about the mama's being protective, it was one of the first things they told my son when he went to school at UAF, don't mess with the moose!  Beautiful shot, and Moose Monday sounds like a plan, but how will you pull that off, with a sighting every 6 months?

I'm always up to seeing more pictures of things that we don't have here in San Diego, or at the Zoo or Wild Animal Park. Hope you entered the ActiveRain Nature & Marketing contest, too.

Wow - amazing photo! We've had a moose at the pond across the street from our house, and a baby moose too! They are such large animals it's always fun to see them in the wild. Thanks for posting the great pic!

Hi Gerry ~ I love moose! We used to camp a lot in Maine and Canada so I saw some then. And one night driving in New Hampshire I came around the corner and thought Hmmm... those are a couple of funny looking horses - not!  But to see a baby moose - that is just the coolest thing. Wow!

Cheryl,

I just have to take a lot of photos when I do get a moose sighting.   Actually, the Moose Monday group is all about moose, real moose and objects representing moose.  I even featured a member's kids who created the moose with antlers look on one of them.   The main goal of the moose Monday group is too moosely have fun.   :)

Debra,

Thank you for your regular contributions to the Moose Monday group.  It sure looks like there are more moose sightings in Homer, Alaska thank in Red Lodge, Montana and especially in your back yard which the moose like to visit quite frequently.  :)

There is something special about seeing a mother and her baby no matter what kind of animal we are talking of.   I am glad you came by to see this cute pair of moose.  :)
