Reaching out to someone who falls

From the time we were young we were often taught and developed an innate sense of wanting to help others.  Maybe we helped a friend who fell down on the playground by offering them a hand and as we got older we found ourselves doing good deeds for people we didn't even know but obviously needed our help whether through volunteering, mentoring or just offering them some helpful advice.

In this day and age, when the typical message is "Look out for number one" I believe that most people that I have encountered here on ActiveRain have a different mantra that can best be described as
"I've walked in your shoes"  "I know your pain" and "I want to share and help."

Have you ever noticed that by putting yourself in someone else's shoes that you often feel inclined to offer them your understanding, support, encouragement and advice because you can relate to what they're feeling and going through.  Isn't that what we all do here and what being part of a network and social media is all about?  Caring about others is simple human nature and allowing that connection to exist can be quite rewarding and can contribute great things to you personally and professionally.

Walking in someone else's shoes

Psychologists have long studied the effects of people helping others, stating those that helped others released endorphins when they gave and ultimately lived longer and healthier lives.  This is known as the "Helpers High."

Whatever your role, I believe participating on a network such as ActiveRain, we all have the ability to possess the "Helper's High".    Our careers in real estate in which we offer help to consumers and colleagues via our online interactions, we are focused on building trust, meeting our client's needs, educating, sharing and developing that human connection.  It's all about freely giving without any guarantee that we'll get anything back.

Since joining this network last August and having the opportunity to interact with so many of you via our blogs/comments and even work with many of you as my client it has convinced me that "giving" is receiving.  I don't have enough fingers and toes to count all the times I have had someone share a piece of knowledge, advice or just a simple word of support, encouragement and thanks.  These simple acts of kindness are what encourages me every day to do my very best, to give of myself and my knowledge via my blog with the hopes of interacting and engaging with so many talented people that so easily share themselves and their knowledge with me and everyone on this network.  My giving = receiving on so many levels.  How about you - have you experienced the same?

Helper's High

If you are new to this network or new to blogging, I encourage you, no wait, I implore you to get involved - share your comments, thoughts, and ideas and you too will feel the effects of the "Helper's High" along with connecting with some amazing people - potential clients and colleagues - that will surely take your business and your interactions to new levels and certainly contribute to a happier and healthier you.

What is it about this network or your role in real estate that provides you with that "Helper's High"?

What a wonderful post, Anne Marie.  I think it's that drive that gets us going as virtual assistants, too.  Anytime I get a comment on my blog, I get a bit of a high.  I lost track of how much great advice has been given on so many blogs in the Rain.  It's nice to know that, no matter what your question, there is someone else who has been through it and can give you advice on how to remedy the situation and it's only a search away.

Anne Marie,

Gosh it was SO refreshing to read your post today after reading some VERY negative posts on certain topics.  I choose to be an optimist too, and considering that I entered the real estate profession  just before the market burst, sometimes it's hard to stay positive.

My mantra, vision, mission statement is the Golden Rule.  Corny as it sounds, it covers everything.  I treat my clients, colleagues, vendors - everyone the way I'd like to be treated myself.  If that means hauling and hoping, I do it - at least I'm learning my market.  It it means giving advice to my clients that helps them (even when it hurts me financially), I'm there.

I've had so many people help me since i first joined ActiveRain a few months ago.  It's so heart warming, and when I get up and running, I plan to pay it forward and help everyone I can!

Thanks for being a ray of sunshine today!

Anne Marie,

This is the most giving bunch of people I've met in my 60 years!  The last two years in the Rain have helped me immeasurably, and it's been people like many who commented who have helped me.  Congratulations on your feature, and thank you for pointing out why doing unto others is good for us.

Anne Marie,

You reap what you sow.  You sow kindness and giving you get it back in return.  You can also sow

the "what's in for me attitude" and not get too much.  Great post.

Thank you, Anne Marie, for the great post. I love the term "Helper's High!" Now definitely in my vocab! Much better than the "well paid social work" I used to refer to!

That's what got me started in real estate 37 years ago... I was just so thrilled that they would actually pay me, too! And I was able to raise my 4 little girls mostly without child support and I made so many friends.

When we are giving, we are usually doing it because it is a reward...  WE are rewarded for helping others.  Lot os people deny that, though...

Dorie - I know we both hold that same philosophy and you obviously love what you do for your clients - it has to be an amazing feeling to see a client receive their keys to their new home.

Jason - thanks for your words of support and yes, I thought this was a term that so many people could relate to since we not only do it in each of our roles but because we participate in a network such as AR.

Kathleen- Yes, I think so many of us freely give without the expectation of receiving anything back which is often not the case at all - we do receive back in comments and readership and  just the simple interaction that comes from being a participant.  Thank you for sharing your experience with Judi - how lovely is that!

Chris - You said it!

Ginger - I completely agree and sometimes we just need to be reminded that the simple act of giving does create such great feelings for all involved.

Crystal - So true and like I've said - you will receive great things back automatically.

Tony and Darcy - thank you - I couldn't agree with you more.

Betina - What a great curse to have and I'm sure your clients and people you encounter feel it and benefit from it - hope you do too!

Brian - I truly believe that to be true.

TLW - Nice to see you and thanks for joining.  I certainly think you possess the Helpers High - no doubt - something so simple can create amazing feelings and circumstances for all - thanks!

Brian - I agree with that statement.

Gary - I agree with you - it's in all of us and just needs to be practiced more - So happy you like the term - when thinking about the feeling I get from helping and receiving great comments back it best described what I was feeling and I knew so many would be able to relate to it.

An - It has to be an amazing feeling that I hope you experience over and over again.

Lou - thank you and it really is a network for sharing and learning from one another.

Sheila - I'm with you - it's what keeps me here and brings me back.  When I think about all I've learned it just astounds me and has me feeling blessed to be associated with so many great people who do so readily share.

Sea to Sea - Thank you!

Roland - thanbk you and that is absolutely true!

Russ - That is so true and esp now when the markets are tough that statement is even more true.  Those that have stuck with it are doing so, at least I believe so, because they truly love giving.

Brad - How nice to see you.  Yes, I think we have the same mindset when it comes to helping others Brad.  Joining last August I wasn't sure what to make of this network and I quickly discovered there was much to learn and people interested in what I could share - I have certainly received so much from being a part of this network.  Funny, I was just contacted yesterday by someone that found me on the Rain thinking I was an agent.  I believe that came from the fact that I'm out here sharing and interacting - great things do come your way simply by giving.

Carla - Yes, it's often the simple ways of giving that have such an amazing impact.  Helpers High came from me trying to describe the feeling I get when I blog and receive comments back which are so often full of appreciation for what I shared.

Joan - thank you and I so agree with you.

Christine - Now, that's a great feeling!

Dawn - LOL and thank you.

Heather - thank you and I think we can both relate to that feeling since every day we are "helping" and "sharing" our skills, services and advice with clients.  You are so right - there's always someone out here that will know, share and relate with us.

Melissa - How nice - thank you!  While I know there are different opinions and points of view on topics - I choose to look from the other side of things - optimism and how can I fix things - make them work.  It's a choice and I get far more good from that outlook.  I am so happy to hear that you've had a great experience here on the Rain and yes, paying it forward is certainly part of it all.  Thank you again for stopping by to share some of your sunshine and positive attitude.

Judi - thank you and here's hoping you experience that many times over.

Carol - You got it!  Helping is just that easy.

Naoma - How nice of you to say.  It's funny when I first starting writing I often thought - am I giving too much  - my answer is no - I'm giving exactly what I should be.  Thanks my friend.

Mike - Like you, I have experienced the very same and so many that have commented here have helped me as well.  I have talked with many from the Rain and all too often I will hear names mentioned of other Rain members in which the person is describing how helpful people have been to them.  It really is that simple - doing unto others is good for them and for us.

Deborah - thank you and that's so true - it will all come back to you if you give it freely.

Bill - thank you!  I don't doubt that for a second - you have certainly been someone that I feel has always given to your clients, readers and colleagues both here and in your market.

Joe - I like it!

Michael - What a great quote!

Kevin & Monica - I'm with you - it amazes me and pleases me every day.

Pat - Happy you have a new term to add to your vocabulary and you obviously love what you do to be a part of it for 37 years - how wonderful that you could find something that not only helped you provide for your family but provide for others.

Erica - thank you and it's so true - I can't remember what it was like before joining this network - guess I wiped it from my mind.

Chris & Stephanie - This is so true - the rewards are endless.  I often will come out to read or post and will come across a post that will certainly stick with me and make a difference in how I do things - there's such power in sharing our knowledge and ourselves.

Lane - Who doesn't want to feel great is my question - if you can get that simply by sharing - I'm all for it.

Thank you to everyone for your amazing comments and most especially for sharing your thoughts, knowledge and support with me.  You have truly made a difference to me and my experience here on the Rain. ~Anne Marie

You are so right!  I find when I give, I get so much more in return.  AR is full of helpful and understanding people.  I feel I've given very little.

Thanks for a great post.  Have a blessed day!
