If you leave a comment, Jim will visit your blog and comment. When we first got Zoey the Cool Cat (picture at right), she had a tendency to keep me up at night since I'm a fairly light sleeper.

Fortunately, my marketing guru keeps the same hours as Zoey the Cool Cat, hours punctuated by cat naps here and there, but my mom, who has a lot of experience with cats, sent me her list of ten ways to get some sleep, especially with a new cat that's not yet familiar and comfortable with its new territory.

  1. Give your cat its own bed. Don't let your cat sleep on your bed. Cats react to smells, and once it connects the smell of you with the smell of you that's on your bed sheets, you're sunk. If your cat doesn't like his bed, put some of your dirty clothes in it until kitty likes it.
  2. Zoey the Cool Cat all in tanglesPlay with your cat before you go to bed. Cats by nature are nocturnal animals, sleeping during the day and hunting at night. A great way to help them to say goodbye to their schedule and hello to yours is to play with them for about 15 minutes before bedtime
  3. Don't let your cat into your sleeping room. That means closing the door when you're asleep. Kitty might scratch at the door for a little while, but will ultimately give up and go to sleep or find another activity. Prevent damage to doors by installing a scratch pad on it or trimming kitty's claws.
  4. Use earplugs. I've heard that swimmer's earplugs are good, but I don't like anything in my ears, so this one is not for me.
  5. Zoey the Cool Cat, very relaxedPut on some music to listen to as you fall asleep. I can't go to sleep with music or the television on, but I do like the ceiling fan on because it makes a soft swooshing sound.
  6. Get kitty adjusted to a regular food schedule by not giving into demands for food. This is actually funny since cats would rather train us than have us train them. However, it's actually not hard to train cats, although perhaps a little more difficult than dogs since cats don't react as specifically to doggie treats for rolling over -- LOL.
  7. Take a temporary sleep aid while kitty gets adjusted to your schedule: glass of warm milk flavored with a drop of vanilla, mild sedative from the doctor, etc.
  8. Zoey the Cool Cat in her bedEstablish a persistent and consistent schedule. Cats are like people in that they don't like surprises. To everything there is a season, and to every cat there should be a time for food, play, grooming, love, sitting on the patio looking at the stars, etc.
  9. Make the room totally dark. Another one that I don't like since I like nightlights. However, even though cats can see extremely well in very low light, they cannot see in total darkness. Of course, neither can I! If they can't see, they are more inclined to simply go to sleep.
  10. Get kitty a playmate. This one initially didn't make sense to me because if you can't sleep with one cat, how could you possibly sleep with two? Of course, further evaluation reminded me that one cat can keep the other occupied while I sleep.
  11. Give kitty to a friend or the animal shelter. Alright, so this is #11 and was not sent to me by my mom, but if you determine that kitty just isn't right for you or your household, please, please, please don't abandon it alongside a dark and dangerous road one night. Thanks.

My cat used to love sleeping in our bed, and on the pillows at that-almost on top of my head! Wish I had known about this when she was a kitten.

Best regards.

Hi Jim ~ I love it when Champ sleeps in my bed - he's a bit less likely to - or at least joins me later - now that it's hot.  When it's cooler he sleeps by my head and puts his cheek on mine - heaven!

Liz

PS - great shots of the cool cat - she has realllly long paws!

OK, would you like to teach Tonkinese to read so they can learn this list? :)  I did try closing the door to the bedroom, years ago, and ended up with shredded carpet....(!) What would we do without kitties? :)

  1. Jim, I can just about guarantee that if Russel didn't keep Zoey the Cool Cat hours, you would soon find the list would be another list for the circular file! They are excellent at training us, I would say if we could get cats to train kids, we would all be happy!

Hi Jim,

I enjoyed your cat tips from your mom!  I just gave up and 2 of my cats always sleep with me.  One on my stomach and one on my pillow!  Cute post!  I love the photos of Zoey in her sleeping postions and various resting places!  Thanks for sharing!

Let's hope you are not thinking of number 11 as the answer -- we would all miss Zoey.

What?!?  Banish cats from the bedroom?  We sleep with all our cats on our bed and each has his or her own special spot.  Each night when it's time to retire, I head to the back of the house and say "Bedtime," and a parade of 5 kitties follows me down the hall to our room and they wait for me to climb into bed so they can each get cozy in their own special place.

When we travel, I miss my cats and usually have trouble sleeping the first night.

Hey, Julie - You don't have a three-month-old cat, you still have a kitten! Good luck getting some sleep!

Hey, Michael - I'm not sure I could go through raising a cat from the kitten stage, unless my marketing guru took on all the important tasks - LOL.

Hey, Matt - The fact that kitties are so demanding is one of the reasons why we got an older cat, that and the fact that she was spayed, trained, and cost less to adopt than a kitten. Seems like everyone wants kittens with older cats being difficult to adopt out, so we went with the older cat.

Hey, Mike - The quality of sleep, watching television, etc., etc., etc.

Hey, Dan - Don't let on to Russel.

Hey, Ann - Russel tells me that Zoey the Cool Cat used to wake him up every morning at 4:30, usually by stepping all over him or licking his face and head. Fortunately, Russel and Zoey the Cool Cat keep the same weird hours while I'm asleep in the other room.

Hey, Sharon - You've only seen a couple of our thousands of photos of this little monster we have.

Hey, Liz - My mom's cat sleeps cheek to cheek with her. She also thinks it's heaven.

Hey, Shoshana - Easy solution: tile floors.

Hey, Andrea - I'm fortunate that Russel and Zoey the Cool Cat keep the same hours.

Hey, Al & Peggy - "A long, long, long, long time ago" in a galaxy far, far away? LOL

Hey, Rita - You're not supposed to give in! Do you give in when you're negotiating a contract? LOL

Hey, Bob & Carolin - Not me. At this point I don't know what I'd do without Zoey the Cool Cat. I guess get another one. They all have their own personalities. But Zoey the Cool Cat is only three, and since she's an indoor only cat, hopefully another fifteen years or so.

Hey, Susan - I can see you and your little followers parading down the hall to the bedroom. We want pictures! LOL

i have to disagree with #10. The two of them will still try to wake you to play with them. I say add #12. Close the bedroom door with them in the living room! When i house-sit for my BF, her kitty plays with my earrings while I sleep, which really freaks me out!
