Tell your parents, your children, your friends, your clients, everyone you run across. Put your car keys beside your bed at night. If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car. The alarm will be set off, and the horn will continue to sound until either you turn it off or the car battery dies.

Next time you come home for the night and you start to put your keys away, think of this: It's a security alarm system that you probably already have and requires no installation. Test it. It will go off from most everywhere inside your house and will keep honking until your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the key fob chain.

It works if you park in your driveway or garage. If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break in your house, odds are the burglar/rapist won't stick around... after a few seconds all the neighbors will be looking out their windows to see who is out there and sure enough the criminal won't want that! And remember to carry your keys while walking to your car in a parking lot. The alarm can work the same way there. I always have my keys out in the Mall of America ramp or the hospital ramps in the cities.

For someone working outside in their yard - who falls or starts to feel ill (heart attack) - push the button. Those living in secluded or rural areas are on their own, but even where I live - if the neighbors knew "the signal" could hear a honking horn across 80 acres.

Excellent tip it also a great idea for women in parking lots.  After shopping, as they approach, their car they should have their keys out and thumb on the button.

Kathleen, that's a good tip.  We always hear car alarms going off, but when they don't turn off right away is the time when we'll take a look.

Great tip Kathleen. As a woman I always have my keys handy when walking in parking lots but keeping it by the bed at night is a great idea.

It is amazing how simple that advice is but I have never heard of it or thought of it!  After reading this I would add that it would be great advice for women showing houses to keep their remote in their hand while showing....should someone try anything I quick pressing of a button could save your life.  I will be discussing this with my agents in our next meeting.  Thanks!

I have actually done this after reading it somewhere before. I did it to my neighbors dog, whom he chooses to let out at 3 every morning when he gets home to roam through the neighborhood. I am glad to say he has not done it since.

Thanks for the advice, Kathleen!

I've always done this in parking lots, but never thought about keeping the keys by the bed.

Fantastic idea.   Most all cars have this already, and living in town it could be a real benifit.  Even out in Rural america, it may come in handy.

This is great advice Kathleen!  I have never thought about putting it next to the bed, but have it out many times whenever I feel uncomfortable.  I hate to admit it, but I have also used it to find my car in the parking lot before.  Thanks for sharing this with us - I plan to spread the word!

My keys and my iPhone are next to my bed every night.  Also have my phone programmed with I.C.E. family members. Great blog post!
