Plastic Bottles Banned From All Landfills in North Carolina

NC Building Nation's Largest Plastic Recycling Plant

Green Movement NC - Plastic Bottles Banned - Green Homes NCAs of Oct. 1, 2009, North Carolina will no longer allow any rigid plastic containers in landfills.  This law applies to any plastic bottle with a neck smaller than the container itself, which includes water bottles, soda bottles, milk jugs, shampoo bottles, and much more.

NC is the first state in the Southeast to forward the green movement with a statewide plastic bottle ban.  Wisconsin and Massachusetts have similar laws, as do a few municipalities across the nation.

Shaw Industries (which manufactures Green Label carpets) is one of the partners building the nation's largest facility to recycle and process plastic bottles, with a maximum capacity of 280 million pounds of material per year!

Amazing that we can manage to use that much plastic in a year, and good to hear it's going to be remade into other products, like Green Label carpets...

This is great to hear. With plastic bottles so prevalent, we need to be recycling them. Glad NC is on the Green bandwagon.

Best regards.

SOunds like a great idea; however, enforcement may be a bit of a problem. When you visit a public place there are typically trash containers that hav bags and are usually tied up and sent to the landfill? Best of luck, but I think it will be a difficult challenge to enforce.

Chris - Yeah, I'm not sure exactly how this will be enforced.  But I hope it means a much bigger move towards recycling.  Most cities in the area are great about providing recycling containers, and taking a wide variety of different materials.

Michael - Amazingly enough, North Carolina has more green certified homes than any other state, according to the Green Home Builders of the Triangle!

Interestingly enough- nearly 80% of all plastic bottles are already being recyled.  It's good to see NC making the move...

Wow this is great.  I am going to reblog to spread the word to TN as the conservation of earth and it's resources need to be on a global level, hopefully TN will follow the lead of our NC neighbors.

Mike - I'm not sure what the exact numbers are, but there is a huge push for recycling already.  This is just one more step in getting plastic "officially" banned from the landfills.  I'm excited about the plastic recycling plant, which means more of that plastic will be reused!

Pam - Plastic is wonderful (I believe the keyboard I'm currently tapping is composed of some sort!), but needs to be used (and reused) responsibly.

Christine/Jennifer - thanks!

Thanks for this post Penny!  Definately going to reblog for those in the area that may not have seen this yet!  I continue to be thoroughly impressed with NCs Green Efforts! Just ANOTHER reason to consider this area strongly as a place to LIVE!

Good post Penny.  Now if we could get the rest of the country to ban these as well...  and those silly Wal-Mart plastic bags that litter the roadways, that would be great!

Leesa - The movement is terrific, and with things like the Green Home Builders of the Triangle, Southern Energy Management, and the NC Solar Center, I'm sure we'll see more wonderful efforts.

Brian - We certainly need a more concerted recycling effort in every city throughout the nation...
