Wordless Wednesday ~ Motherhood in a Saguaro Cactus

Wordless Wednesday ~ Motherhood in a Saguaro Cactus

Sun City West Arizona Wildlife

I was showing a home in Sun City West this morning. As I left the property I glanced over towards the neighbors Saguaro.  Hidden in the middle of the large arms of the Saguaro Cactus amist cacti blooms and thorns was a lone bird. Here she sat keeping her eggs warm, away from preditors.

Aaww! That's so adorable. I guess it's pretty safe in there, from any prey. Is there something about their feathers that protects them from the cactus spikes?

Lisa, I don't think so. I've never seen a dove nest in a Saguaro before.

Debra, the bird was in a very old cactus, tall with many arms.  I would safely guess that the cactus was at least 100 years old.

Leolinda, That is a touching photos.  And I hope the bird isn't touching those spines too much.

Leolinda:  Motherhood in a Saguaro Cactus... sounds pretty painful to me... unless, that is, you are another Saguaro Cactus... LOL.

Seriously, it looks like this little momma bird really knows her stuff.  What a great place to build a nest.  Thanks for this adorable picture.

Gary, she's sitting in a bed of twigs.

Karen Anne, she looked comfortable and was definitely safe from most predators.  It was a tall cactus and I stood in the bed of my husband's truck to take this picture.

It's like living with a permanent security system!  How safe they must feel living in there!  Great shot!

Hi Leolinda... what an interesting pic.  I am surprised the bird was about to build a nest there without injuring itself!  But now that it's built the security factor has to be great!

Laura, I've wondered where I took this picture, so that I could go back to observe the chicks.
