In my time on this little blue marble I've worked for a Fortune 100 company and now own and operate a small business.  While the former had a substantially larger budget, there are a few universal principles all business owners understand.

Keep your eye on the bottom line.

A few days ago President Obama directed his cabinet to find $100 million in spending cuts... from a $3.6 trillion budget. The result?  Seventy seven cost savings measures (.PDF) were identified totaling $102 million. That's a good start but really, $102 million in savings is all they could find?

Savings is good thing right?  I mean, the President is cutting expenses.

As a fiscal conservative I've operated under the belief that the private sector, with few exceptions, is more efficient and cost conscious than any government entity will ever be. Confirmation came again this morning in an article on CNBC.

While the President was lauding his cabinet members for diligently rooting out waste, Royal Dutch Shell announced that amid a 70% decrease in profit, the energy giant managed to achieve "$700 million in cost savings in the first half of the year..."

Shell reacts to a negative economic outlook by tightening its belt... while the US continues runaway Federal spending.  The sad part of course is despite an $11 trillion debt, there's still no real help on the horizon for American homeowners and small business owners.

The could cut so much more if they did away with all the wasteful spending our government does. Perhaps they should ask Shell for some suggestions.

I would bet a fresh faced college graduate could find more savings than what was found. There idea of necessary and ours is different in so many ways.

Jesse - my last position with a Fortune 50 company I led a team that was tasked with cutting costs by 50% while increasing productivity by 50%, in four years. We did it in three, without eliminating jobs. Government can and should learn a few things from those they revile.

Jesse, I do have to admit that 100M in savings as compared to the trillions that we are in debt is but chump change. Until the American folks get really fed up with business as usual from the FEDS, nothing will change - even if you do find it in the seat cushions...

Jesse...

I think that the President is counting on the fact that most citizens learned their math in public schools!

Government should be under more scrutiny for efficiency, not less.  Unfortunately, the opposite seems to be the reality.  It is unbelievable how stupid those in office think the general public is.  They are spending their way out ... how many Realtors have been spending their way out of their problem?  The few are going out of business.  Most of us have cut costs to maintain our business.

Hi Jesse,
I believe the answer is "one term" for politicians--be it 3 years or 10 years.  As it is now, they always have their eye on the next election and what they must do to get re-elected.

All of us are searching in the couch cushions daily for some spare change and Washington should do likewise.  Thanks for a great post.

If Government cuts back too much spending, then they lose their lobby money. How else can they get bribes? Our spending as a nation is completely out of control and has been for a long time.

Jesse,

I think it has something to do with what used to be called "New Math".  Never was really clear how it worked but I think that I am seeing how it really works.  You take apples and add them to oranges the add bananas and grapefruit to get the answer.  The end results is a lot of fruits trying to make a vegetable salad.

When the real answer all along is stop adding to the debt and start subtracting to get the answer you are looking for.

Would they budget an extra trillion so that then they came come in a great photo-op session and find how to save a buck?

Jesse I think if they could just pretend that they did not have an unlimited source of money like the rest of us have to face in reality they could find ways to cut corners.

Jesse- If only they would hire me. I would charge $2 Million and cut Billions! How's that for a good ROI?

Jesse,

This whole mess has a new face (27 years young) in Republican politics here in AZ running for Congress against the perennially entrenched Raul Grijalva.  Ruth McClung.  Stay tuned!  Check out www.Ruth4AZ.com

Jesse & Kathy - I just think society has changed it's ideas about spending vs. saving.  Back when our grandparents were young, they didn't spend their money - all they did was save.  Today, many families are spending more money than they make each month and think nothing of it.  The government has been doing this forever.

Jesse...While the spending cuts are a start as you say...we need a lot more of this coming up.  Spending Billions and then cutting a few millions doesn't equal out!

Jesse, that cost savings based on the overall spend is a drop in the bucket. I guess the people looking to save money need to learn about fractions and decimals from basic math again.

Jesse - Well put!  It is a shame that it's obvious "Spend! Spend! Spend!" Just not on the good things.
