George, awesome! I love this type of hardware store, just love it. Way to go. You sure you are not undercover for a newspaper or something? I bet you do a fish store before this is finished. :D

Andrea, now there is an idea I had not thought of and there is one just down the street. I had a blast going around talking to some of the local small business people and taking pictures for the next series of blogs.

I miss the old fashioned hardware stores like this. It is always easier to find what you are looking for and listen to some practical advice from someone who cares.

George - this is a wonderful Localism post. Seems so many places like this has just disappeared. I see you have blogging like crazy recently...those points really CAN be an incentive. LOL

Jim, it is amazing how much there is in this small space, especially things that you would not find anywhere else.

Jeff I use to be involved in a couple of organizations with Scott's Uncle Bob who ran the store before him, and Scott's son was one the Middletown Wrestling Team with my youngest son, so I have a few ties with the family. I have a feeling that Scott will be the last one to keep the business going, there does not seem to be any interest by his son to continue it. And yes the points do help to motivate, but they are not the real benefit in this as you well know :)

George, that's a really nice post on Smith and Bishel Hardware. We have the big stores here too, but I like our Ace Hardware. Ace here has really great service and some interesting things too, like cool housewarming gifts.

Jen, we have an Ace Hardware also, and they have good quality also, but Smith & Bishel just seem to have those things that you can't find anywhere else.

I long for an old hardward store. Threre was a great one in SF. This looks like the place to find those things you can't find anywhere else.

Ann, OK I am almost afraid to ask why you would need a screen for hunting diamonds. But I will ask any way, why would you need a screen for hunting diamonds????

I always thought tha you got diamonds out of a mine.
