I wanna call it a cleat or something like that.  I have only been out on the ocean a few times but seem to recall it having some sort of name like that.  It is that thingamajig or domahickey that you tie your pirate ship to so that it doesn't float away while your in the tavern drinking rum.

I know, but I can't think of the name.  It's the thing on the pier that boats tie up to when they dock.

Well, either it's a petrified whale tail or a place to tie up my yacht when I become wealthy!

Kathleen Ann:  My guess... yes... it's the thingie either on a really big boat, or more probably on a pier that you use to tie up some sort of big boat that is docking.

I am not sure... but for some reason my memory tells me it is called a "mooring."  At least, that's what my tired brain tells me.

Looks like they all got it right.  But what is the nautical term?

Looks to be a rusty cleat on the end of a dock...

@ Michael:  Hmmm.  Rusty Cleat ?  Didn't he used to play middle linebacker for the Titans ?  Or was it strong safety ?  I get confused.

JUNE: You are absolutely correct the boats tie up to these when they dock. This was at taken when our ferry from Falmouth, Ma, the Island Queen docked in Oak Bluffs, Martha's Vineyard on 7-14-09 My Aunt's 91st birthday excursion.

RICHARD, IT IS NOT a petrified whale tail though it resembles one, but it is a place to tie boats and some day your yacht.

KAREN ANNE:  This  MOORING HORN CLEAT is found on a pier  that you use to tie up  big boat, as ferrys and yachts. "A vessel is said to be moored when it is fastened to a fixed object such as a pier, quay or the seabed, or to a floating object such as an anchor buoy."

The pier was Church's Pier at Oak Bluffs, Marthas Vineyard, Ma

MIKE: The answers were all correct. The nautical term for this object is Mooring Horn Cleat (nautical), a fitting on ships, boats, and docks to which ropes are tied.

MICHAEL:  Church Pier is an old pier as this was here when I vacationed with my parents back in the 50's and 60's. so this is definitely an old cleat.

Mooring is often accomplished using thick ropes called mooring lines or hawsers. The lines are fixed to deck fittings on the vessel at one end, and fittings on the shore, such as bollards, rings, or cleats, on the other end.

My guess would have been a boat tie down but as I scrolled down to type my response the pic was already revealed.

LIZ: Sorry you did not get the opportunity to guess, but I bet you knew what is was, too, Most everyone who stopped by seem to have the general idea that it was something  to tie a boat to and many knew it was a cleat now they know it is actually called a "Mooring Horn Cleat"

Finally, I got one right...OK, close to right.....I knew what it was but didn't know the correct name.  I would have called it a "thingamajig."  So maybe I can't spell it either!

JANICE:  I am so glad I provided something new for you to learn today. AR is sensational, each day I learn myself something new about the area where a member lives, or some historial event that took place in their state or community and then just lots of facts and numbers. Having a passion for ohotography I love the member's posting of pictures, places, nature, animals, you name it. I am constantly learning. Playing in the rain is so much fun.
