The actual amount is 10% of the home purchase price up to a maximum of $8,000. In other words if you buy a home for $60,000 you would get a $6,000 tax credit that you can claim this year! Do you qualify? If you have not owned a home for the past 3 years, if your income as a single person is $75,000 or less, or $150,000 or less for a married couple, you do indeed qualify.
