Robert Schwabe - Orange Park FL Real Estate (Keller Williams- First Coast Realty) I did not lose it..mentally, but I knew I messed up. I relied too much on the fact I was working a newer computer.
Victoria Oak Bay Realtor Fred Carver 250-598-2963 for Victoria Oak Bay Homes (Re/Max Camosun Oak Bay & Surrounding Area Real Estate) LOL! Fred it was an "Aha moment" and an "Oh No Moment"at the same time! I will check out dropbox!
Jim - Sorry to hear it. At the least get an external HD to back up to on a weekly basis. Glad to hear you're back up and running.... whew...
I like to take a multi-prong approach. Periodically I prefer to take a complete "snapshot" of my entire hard drive, burned to bootable DVD's. This gives me a complete system should the hard drive die. Just pop in a new hard drive (4 screws and 2 plugs), put in back up DVD and I'm back to where I was before the hard drive crash.
The other side of the prong is incremental backup, that is only the files I've used or changed. I find the combination of the two to be effective from both a cost standpoint and a recovery standpoint.
If you didn't back it up, it didn't happen.
Wow what a bummer Jim. I guess you found out the hard way. Never again I am sure:)
Robert Hammerstein (Coldwell Banker) Well I had the external drive, I just wasn't using it. My bad!
Bill Gassett Metrowest Massachusetts Real Estate (RE/MAX Executive Realty) Well Bill it has been a long time, and I forgot the lesson! I should be backing up regularly.
I learned the hard way too.
As one person told me it is IF your computer is going to fail it is WHEN.
:)
Jim- I too learned this lesson the almost catastrophic way. Always back it up! Good to see you~
Missy Caulk-Ann Arbor- Realtor(R)- Ann Arbor Real Estate (Keller Williams-Ann Arbor) I was really blessed this time by the Grace of God. I messed up, and everything is running well again. It cost me about $290....to rebuild the system professionally.
Brentwood TN Real Estate/Homes - Vanessa Stalets REALTOR® (RE/MAX Elite) I need to remember to back it up! Take care!

Bill Gassett Metrowest Massachusetts Real Estate (RE/MAX Executive Realty) LOL! 2 days later my laptop almost fried. The good thing is I really do not have any important data on the laptop.
Hello Jim, Great story with lot's of great ideas. I hadn't heard of Synctoy or Drop Box. My laptop was my main machine for many years and died a slow death -- thus, I was backing it up regularly. One of my clients runs a PC shop and I had him build my new desk-top. Windows 7 is awesome with a quad-core and 8Gig of RAM! Oh yes, I had better back it up as well! John
Alexander-Slocum REMAX Team - Vancouver WA Real Estate (RE/MAX equity group, inc. - Vancouver Washington) I learned a lot here, and have a lot of new ideas to check out! Back up is the key!
