Santa Clara County may seize Sargent ranch

The Morgan Hill Times is reporting that if the current owners of 5,600 acres of ranch land do not pay the past due tax bill, the county will be able to purchase the land for the price of the past due taxes and turn over to the parks and recreation department.

I don't think that I have a problem with  seizing the land - that part makes sense. However, I don't like it when government just reaps the benefit from a situation like this. The amount they would be paying for the land is far below market and no other parties are allowed to bid for the land.

Don't get me wrong. I actually like the idea of that area becoming a park. I think that a huge development there would be a bad thing for the area in general.

What I dislike are situations where the county seems to overstep the rights of the public in getting what they want.

So while I suppose I could just shut up and be happy that what is happening is what I think should be happening - I just can't get myself to an "ends justify the means" place when it comes to allowing the government free reign over what they do. After all, they are there to mess with our lives EVERY SINGLE DAY. The power they use correctly today, is likely to be used over and over again INCORRECTLY in the future.

Robert, I agree with you. Wouldn't selling to the highest bidder and just paying the bill do the trick? Seems to me it's like "Killing a mouse with a canon ball" as the saying goes.
