Historic Roosevelt Inn Bed & Breakfast in Downtown Coeur d'Alene

John and Tina HoughMy childhood friend, John Hough, has siezed an opportunity that few of us will ever have.  To live, and work, in his former elementary school!  The Roosevelt is Coeur d'Alene's oldest remaining schoolhouse.  It's listed on The National Register of Historical Places and is recognized as an Historic Inn of America.

John, along with his wife Tina, are the innkeepers at The Roosevelt Inn.  (And yes, they are Aunt and Uncle to Dancing with the Stars' Julianne and Derek Hough.) It's located just a hop, skip and a jump from Downtown Coeur d'Alene, Coeur d'Alene City Park and Coeur d'Alene City Beach. Ten years ago John and Tina set out on their adventure and haven't looked back.  They are passionate about their inn, their guests, their activities and the service they provide.

Recently, John, Tina and the Roosevelt Inn were mentioned in an outstanding Los Angeles Times article featuring Coeur d'Alene as a lakeside playground.

In addition to providing world class guest services, they serve up everything from High Tea to Mystery Dinners.  John even officiates at weddings! Their breakfasts are legendary, and Tina has compiled a cookbook of their favorites.  My family has adopted their Apple Cider Pancakes as our traditional Christmas Morning breakfast. It just wouldn't be Christmas without them!

The Roosevelt InnFifteen rooms, including handicap, three 2-bedroom suites, The Roosevelt Suite and the fabulous Bell Tower Lake-view Suite are all comfortably climate controlled and have private baths. Each room is furnished elegantly with turn-of-the-century antiques.

The Roosevelt InnThe Roosevelt Inn offers two parlors. The front parlor offers a place to socialize, watch television or a movie from a vast video library, or catch up on your e-mail in the office center. The back parlor, which nestles against the old chimney, is a place to read, relax or play a game on a unique chess set. In the evening, gather in the dining room for board games or cards.

There are links on their website for all kinds of local Coeur d'Alene and North Idaho activities and adventures.  Or just ask them for a recommendation for a restaurant or an afternoon excursion.  Be sure to tell them Janna sent you!

If I ever have the opportunity, that is where I would like to stay!  I love stories like this!  My aunt and her husband live in what used to be a fire house.  It is awesome!  Those pancakes sound really good!

I have never watched "Dancing with the Stars" so I missed the Houghs. If I get to Coeur d'Alene, I'll make sure not to miss the Roosevelt.

I attended Roosevelt School in 1955-56 when I was in the 1st grade. I have a picture of that class seated on the front steps. The teacher name was Mrs. Burns. (I am not in the picture). I still remember some of the kids.

Mike & Steve Stoddard, Nancy Donald, Ken Hanson, Keith Wadbey, Billy Hamilton, Olivia Ryder, Judy Jones, and a few of the others.

If you would like a copy of it, please let me know.
