So, How Much Is Starbucks Costing You Each Year?

Drinking specialty coffee is an expensive habit for many people

Have you ever wondered how much your coffee habit is costing you?

Courtesy of software developer Hugh Chou, use the Coffee Calculator to calculate how much you pay for coffee each year, and how much money you forgo in savings because of it.

Did you know:  If you buy a $1.87 grande drip coffee from Starbucks every working day instead of drinking free coffee in your office, you'll forfeit more than $6,000 over 10 years' time?

Compounding the problem?  Very few of us take our coffee "plain".

If you prefer the grande, sugar-free vanilla, non-fat latte, well, you'd best check out the savings for yourself.

The next time you wonder where you'll find money for a downpayment on a new home, or pay for lawn care, or a car repair, begin the planning process by studying the dollars you spend on non-essential items.

Starting with specialty coffee.

I just started making my own iced coffees and lattes using an on New Orleans recipe: It's phenomenal and it's pennies vs. the Starbucks alternative. Little things do add up over time.

John, there's just something about the mocha at Starbucks...can't be duplicated!

Not much, because I'm not a Starsbuck fan.  I like coffee, just not theirs.  Maybe that's why I don't have enough sales, I'm not hanging out in a Starbuck.  Then it might be worth it . . .

What a cute little calculator.  Dan, you tease us with your New Orleans coffee, but don't share the recipe?  That's not very neighborly :-)

Funny post, I KNOW it is expensive.  Suzee Orman used to rant about the price of Starbucks until she finally had one---it's the only thing I've ever heard her take back!  I love the coffee there :)

LOL @ Don

How the heck are we gonna blog without our Mocha Madness? :)

Ive really tried to cut back lately, since now my allocated coffee money is now going into my gas tank.  But sometimes though you just gotta have it!!

Hi John,  Luckily I haven't added Starbuck's to my addiction list.  I have colleages with numbers approaching the $2,500 a year habit.  I'm going to incorporate those amounts in to my counter-offers, that's serious mortgage money there.  But really, you get "free" coffee at the office!

Thank goodness I'm NOT a COFFEE DRINKER!  I guess that saves me a few 'Bucks!

I always say everyone has to have a $5 a day habit.  Especially living in habitsville USA.  Someone who just has a coffee habit here is a GOOD THING!

BTW, I make my own iced mocha latte from my home every morning.  Starbucks makes me shake and gives my tummy gurgles!

This has got to be one of the best posts ever.  Think of the savings benefit to young kids looking to purchase their first home.

I'm not a coffee drinker but there are a lot of people that are.  I have heard of Realtors that are drawing a lot internet leads by offering Starbucks gift cards to those that register on their website with accurate information

Although a new Starbucks in Baxter, MN is opening soon, I prefer Carribou Coffee or our Grab-A Java  but none of them are free and since I have a home office it isn't free there either.  It certainly does add up - now you could do one for the Mountain Dew drinkers

the beauty of starbucks is that i look at the menu and i don't have a clue as to what they are selling so i go somewhere else and get regular coffee and maybe even fill up my car with gas.

I love coffee...the taste, the smell, the warmth....although I have to admit I do drink decafe otherwise I get the jjjjjitters.  :)  Sometimes I make it, sometime I buy it for I enjoy trying different kinds, its half the fun!  It is painful though to see how much its costing me!  OUCH.

Isn't it crazy that we stand in line to spend lots of money for something we can't even pronounce?

Nonetheless, I send out Starbucks cards with a "Thanks a Latte" note to everyone who does a little extra to make things easier for the rest of us.
