Locks of Love - West Palm Beach Florida - Donating Hair to Help Children

Locks of Love became near and dear to my heart a few years ago when my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer.  Like most cancer patients she lost all of her hair, but unlike most cancer patients my mom shaved her head the minute her hair started to fall out.  I thought it was such a brave thing to do and couldn't imagine how much strength it took.

The first time I saw my mom's bald head I offered to give her my hair.  My mom laughed at me like she always does and told me I could keep my hair.   In my offended voice I said "fine if you don't want it I'll give it to someone who does" and that's exactly what I did.

locks of love west palm beach floridaI decided to donate my hair to Locks of Love, which is a
Non-Profit Organization that provides hairpieces to children in the United States and Canada who are suffering from long-term medical hair loss.  Through the donation process I found out that Locks of Love is based right here in West Palm Beach Florida, so I was able to bring my donation directly to them.

I DID IT!!!  It took me over a year to grow my hair the extra ten inches that were needed.  I wanted to cut it off numerous times, but I didn't and even though my mom is cancer free today I will continue to donate my hair.

Locks of Love's Mission Statement:
Our mission is to return a sense of self, confidence and normalcy to children suffering from hair loss by utilizing donated ponytails to provide the highest quality hair prosthetics to financially disadvantaged children. The children receive hair prostheses free of charge or on a sliding scale, based on financial need.

"fine if you don't want it I'll give it to someone who does" -- Quite possibly the most interesting way I've ever seen someone begin a charitable endeavor:)  Seriously though, this is a worthy cause and it's great that you help out.  It takes a more effort to do something like this than to write a check.

I donated my hair (15") to Locks of Love about 2 months ago, too. It was a great feeling and a great charity. Thanks for donating as well as for your insights. I probably should have blogged this to encourage others and am glad you did!

Michelle, how great! I also donated my hair in December 2006 and indeed sent it to Florida. It was so strange when they hand you your 'donation' in a rubber band isn't it?  We video'd it and had lots of pics to celebrate the event.  My stylist still tells the story to her clients about what I 'nut' I was and the whole 'event'.  She laughs to this day when we talk about my coming in and saying, Don't you just cut it here?  I also had to grow it a little longer for about 8 months!

Erik - Before I made that statement to my mom I never thought about donating my hair before.  It's definitely a strange way to become charitable, but I'm glad I did.

Barbara - That is AWESOME!  15 " is A LOT of hair, I'm sure you made some boy or girl very happy.  Congrats to you for doing such a wonderful thing!

Bob & Bonnie - Thank you for the kind words!  It's awesome to hear about other people doing this as well.  I personally didn't know about Locks of Love until shortly before my mom became sick.

P.S. I got my thick hair from my dad's side who started going bald at 21.

Lyn - 10 inches is A LOT of hair to grow and manage, espeically if you keep your hair on the longer side.  What a great event and memories it must be for you.  Next time around I'll have to take more pictures.

Hi Michelle,

I heard about this some time ago.  My Dad passed when I was 22 years old and all my hair fell out 6 months later as well as my eyebrows and eye lashes.  The doctor said it would grow back and it did.  However,  it grew back in clumps and looked a little weird.  Sadly, not only does radiation and chemo cause hair loss.  It can also be linked with other diseases.  One of my young first time homebuyers, Megan Samberg, donated her beautiful long hair to Locks of Love - she looked lovely with short hair too!

Sarah - Thank you for sharing your story.  My moms hair grew back differently too, but her hair came back thick and curly, which it was thin and on the straight side before treatment.

I can't wait to donate again, it's an awesome organization and cause.

Very cool set up.  I think my wife has done this.  My hair does not get long enough.

Hi Michelle,

Thanks for bringing attention to a very worthy cause.  My 12 year old daughter just participated in Locks of Love last month.  It was a great experience for her and our family to see her donate her hair to help others.  Like so many others our family has been touched by Cancer as well. I lost a sister in law to breast cancer a few years ago after a long and hard struggle.

Props to you and to all who donate to this cause and participate in the fight for a cure.

What a great charity. Glad your mom's better. I've been fortunate that cancer hasn't been in my family, but it might simply be because my family is quite small -- just two uncles and one brother.

A friend of mine's daughter donated her hair about 2 years ago. She grew it REALLY long and I think gave over 1 foot. This type of donation takes no money at all. Just take care of your hair and let it grow.

John - 10" or more is a lot of hair to manage and A LOT of shampoo.  I'm not sure if I could do more than 10", that's great that your friends daughter was able to do over a foot, I wish I had patience like that.

I have about 12 inches of hair that I would like to donate.  I see that there has not been much traffic here on this website in awhile, perhaps I should try and sell an inch of hair for this charity! Though I was looking to do this rather soon and this idea could take another 12 inches before it gets off the ground.  If this website is monitered and anyone is interested my e-mail is listed, otherwise, I visted the site to see if anyone knew where I could get my hair cut, donated and my remaining hair styled as I am unemployed and cannot afford to have it professionally styled.  Thank you for any information that is offered.
