The Lisboa Restaurant on Lafayette Street in the Brooklyn section of Waterbury, Ct is an experience well worth the effort but only if you come very hungry.

Located at 422 Lafayette, in the heart of a once thriving industrial area, is this understated building that once was a watering hole for the local factory workers. Twenty years ago, Tony Carvalho, the owner saw an opportunity to combine his dream of owning his own business, with his love of cooking and opened this oasis of epicurean delights.

In order to do justice to this post, we decided to have dinner to confirm that the restaurant was worthy of recognition. The Lisboa Restaurant is a first come, first served restaurant so don't try for reservations. Also, as everything is cooked to order, don't make plans for the rest of the evening, and best, don't expect to be rushed out for the next seating, except on special occasions.

Any good meal needs to start with an appetizer or two. As were into an investigative mood, the selected Tapas, (or small samples), were shrimp Angolan style, (upper brown dish), Clams Mozambique, (Metal pot) and grilled Chourico, (Portuguese sausage). Of course the taste needs to be teased with the black olives and the Portuguese rolls. Season with crushed pepper, coriander, and a few other secret spices, the tapas were more than a tease, but definitely a great start.

As no meal would be complete without the obligatory wine, the perfect choice for this fare was the house Vino Verde, translated to green wine, but the effects were far from subtle.

A pause for the salad and some pleasant conversation, and the Lisboa Restaurant wait staff brought out our entrees.

Entrees selected this evening were L to R, Carne Alentejana, Shrimp Lisboa, Grilled quail, and Paella Alentejo.

Crane Alentejana is a sauteed mixture of fresh pork cubes with diced potatoes, fresh clams topped with black olives, and pickled cauliflower florets and carrots.

Shrimp Lisboa was the chef's special presentation of fresh shrimp with peppers and onions, served on a bed of white rice.

Grilled quail with a light wine sauce was probably the simplest

The seafood paella had shrimp, clams, mussels, lobster, scallops, chicken, pork, served in a yellow rice and pea stew.

The wait staff at Lisboa Restaurant served in typical continental manner so that the eating experience lacked for nothing. Background music were traditional portuguese ballads or fados as they are known. Never too loud but just right to have your mind taken to another place.

Good food, great ambience, pleasant conversation and no hustle makes an evening at the Lisboa Restautant in Waterbury, Ct an evening to remember, and one to want to repeat again.

Ed, I was born in the Azores and came here when I was 8 years old.  I grew up in Fox Point Providence, and East Providence.  There are a number of good Portuguese restaurants there now, but they are not the same as Mom's cooking :) :)

I will have to give this place a try.

Karen, this business post challenge could have double values. Or in this case triple because we ate the leftovers as a late snack on Sunday night.
