Living with a golf pro has it's advantages! Not only do I get free golf lessons, this week I had a couple of custom clubs made for me as a surprise!!!

Ron came home with a cute little putter for me and a new wedge. Since I don't own my own clubs (or at least did not until now) I have always used his to practice. Now that this learning is going to a new phase he figured I need my own.................living with a golf pro definitely has it's advantages!!!!

As a former player who attended college on a full golf scholarship and turned pro out of college, - golf instructor, assistant golf pro, and mini-tour player for 6 years, i can say yes, there are advantages.  But I can say in my personal experience that golf pro's can be a very selfish group.  Everything revolves around golf.  If the golf pro is a playing professional, meaning he makes money for his ability shoot low scroes - not from teaching, the golf pro may experience issues of self worth and how well he plays.  If the pro is a teacher then they may be able to trat their job as a job.

I feel sorry for the several girlfriends I had during my 6 years as a golf pro.  They were not a priority in my life......reaching my goals were.  I would open the golf shop up at 6:00 a.m, get off at 3:00, practice for a few hours, then teach a few lessons.  I would often get home at 9:00/10:00 at night.  All my days off were spent playing golf tournaments.

If they get paid to work in the golf shop and punch the cash register, listen to people whine about the pace fo play, and sell merchandise, I can tell you the hours can be a drag.  Open golf shop up at 5:30 a.m. and often close it at 9:00 p.m.  Working weekends is not real fun either.

Anyways, that's my experience.  I left the golf business because I couldn't make it as a player and the thought of running member golf events on weekends hearing people complain about who they got paired with, why the other guy is a sandbagger, complain about the depth of the rough, and always being at the golf course when my kids are growing up just wasn't my goal in life.  Plus, members often treat employees of their country club like dirt.......hired hands.  I wanted to be the member....not be the one fetching their golf bag from the club room, cleaning carts, or sitting out in the hot sun helping 75 year old Mrs. Jones learn how to hit the ball 10 yards further.

Good luck with that.  Maybe it's radically different for Ron....I hope so.

Ron is the most considerate man I have EVER known! Yes, it is different for Ron! First of all, the general public does not come to his shop since it is where the work is done. Some local golfers and pros that are in the area and know of his work or have purchased wedges from him stop by the shop to have work done but that is the extent of visitors there. Most of his clubs are sold over the internet and shipped worldwide.

He closes the shop every Wednesday and takes his employees golfing - his treat! And he has been teaching me to play!!! I love the 64 degree wedge -
