Memories of my childhood came back this week as I walked into my local K-mart and heard those famous words " Blue Light Special " on isle 10. In the 70's especially around Christmas Mom would load up us 7 kids and head to the local K-mart where we would spend the day shopping and picking out what we wanted for Christmas and then sometime later before Christmas, Mom would go and shop trying to catch each item we wanted on the Blue light special. Mom was always the best shopper and we were never disappointed.
I talked briefly with the store manager who said the Blue Light has certainly made their business pick up on the weekends. K-mart is truly an icon and to see them bounce back from near extinction is a remarkable story in itself. The news is looking very good for K-mart as well as their stock price. Anyone including K-mart knows that they cannot compete with Wal Mart on price but as per on a store to store basis I am putting my money on K-mart. The store are cleaner theses days, product is fresh, name brand cloths at discount pricing but for me the sporting goods section is there biggest improvement.
For the Eco friends out there, you need to check out their eco friendliness including lowering the lights at certain times of the days to save on energy. K-mart is also and have been a winner when it comes to recycling, they still condense and recycle their cardboard which is better than the other big brands that send it to the dump.
