Located on the east side of the famous Delray Beach Atlantic Avenue, the Blue Anchor British Pub offers free wi-fi and opens six days a week at 11.30 A.M and at noon on the Seventh Day, as they say, so they have time to get their sins forgiven before they start all over again!
The Florida Pub with a Touch of Real History: Our visit to the Blue Anchor British Bar takes us back into the 19th Century. Back to foggy London Town and to the days when Jack Ripper prowled the shadowy streets and Queen Victoria was upon the throne.
Built it in the mid-1800s, on the site of a 17th Century inn, the outside or the Blue Anchor British Bar was shipped across from England where it had provided a warm and cheery welcome to London's rich, famous and infamous for almost 150 years at the old Blue Anchor Pub in the city's historic Chancery Lane, which was home to many famous residents over the centuries.
The very same doors from the Delray Beach Blue Anchor were well known to Winston Churchill. As a young Fleet Street journalist and Member of Parliament in the early 1900s, he often dropped by the old Blue Anchor for a pint. The pub was also a regular hole for High Court judges and journalists due to its location in the heart of the British law court district.
The pub front doors of the Delray Beach Blue Anchor has also seen infamy! Two of Jack the Ripper's victims, Elizabeth Stride and Catherine Eddowes, are said to have spent their last night alive drinking in the Blue Anchor in 1888.
Did I mention the Ghost? The old pub was haunted by the spirit of a young woman murdered in 1899 by a jealous lover. Her footsteps were often heard in the ceiling at the stroke of 10 P.M. - the time she died. Nothing to fear! At Blue Anchor they sound the ship's bell at 10 each evening to keep the lassie at bay! Some say it works! Others are not so sure!
Lee Harrison is the host for The Florida Pub in Delray Beach.
History aside, the Blue Anchor serves delicious Munchies & Appetizers, Salads, Traditional Meat Pies, Sandwiches, Desserts, and Beverages.
