All things prickly in the Scottsdale Arizona area

You can't visit Arizona without being impressed by the Saguaro cactus - we drove by this the other day on our 3 day trip to Sedona and Scottsdale. They grow very slowly, and this one, given the number of arms, is probably about 200 years old. Cactus wrens love them and use them for nests - you can often see lots of holes. So different from the cactus we see in our area of SoCal.

Hi Jeff, A great photo. When people are asked to envision cactus, I would guess the majority envision the Saguaro cactus in this photo. Beautifully captured.

Jeff, great photo of the cactus.  I saw some really awesome ones in Arizona a couple of years ago.  Beging from WV it was great to see the cactus.

Jeff, OK I have to go and clean out my mind because when I look at that it almost looks like that cactus is doing something that I can't mention on here ....... LOL

Great photo. I had never thought about catus being so old. How do you tell the age? Is it just by how tall it is, or the number of "branches" or is there another way to guess?

William - I suspect that's true. They are amazing plants.

Rebecca - well I am still getting used to the desert landscape in some area and the different plants, being from New England.

George - hmmm, I'd better not ocmment on that. LOL

Carol - I was told it takes about 75 years before they sprout the first arm. And they are protected so you cannot just cut them down.
