New Hampshire Number One for Kids

NEW HAMPSHIRE RANKS NO. 1 FOR CHILDREN

New Hampshire came up on top again as the number one Kid-friendly state in America.  The annual kids count report was released last week by the Annie E. Casy Foundation.  The foundation looks at several factors, including poverty, drop out rates and employment.

The information for the report comes from various sources such as the US Census.  The report is very comprehensive and pinpoints problems in how the federal government measures household poverty and venerable children.  Minnesota ranked second..  Utah ranked third...

For the fourth time in five years, New Hampshire was ranked in first place.

Check out the Report to see how your state did this year.

While the current economy has had an impact on poverty in New Hampshire, increasing to 9% as of 2007, it is predicted that this number has increased in 2008 and 2009.

Many New Hampshire schools and communities have programs in place to try to assist children in need.

Call me to find out why  New Hampshire recently was chosen as the Most Livable State in America! and the Third Healthiest State in America.

Congratulations New Hampshire!

Frank and Sharon -- this is an important accomplishment.  I know that there are many families and children who are suffering in this economy, however, it is good to know that New Hampshire has resouces available to help these kids.

Joan, That is a great distinction to have--I idn't know they rated states for the best in child "friendly."  I'll have to go read the list although I'm not quite sure if I want to know where NY ranks.....

Carole ~ New Hampshire is definately a great place to live and raise kids... however, it is a very different type of environment than New York.  New York has a lot to offer and it is a wonderful state.. it did quite well # 17!

Joan, I wonder why the southern states did so poor?  Texas was better than most but still not at the top.  Looking at the map it seemed like us southern states weren't very kid friendly.

Marcel ~  I have a feeling it was more difficult to the bigger states like Texas.  I bet if they went county by county, Texas would have a lot of great places for kids.

Joan, I am not surprised.  My boys went for about 8 years strait to spend summers at a camp on Lake Winapausaukee. They became counselors for mountaineering and made friends with whom they keep in touch now. They have very found memories there.

Interesting Joan! I did not know NH won this award. NH really has a lot to offer so it should not come as a suprise.

Hannah ~ Thanks for stopping by.  I know PA is a wonderful state and has a lot to offer.  Some states are going through more severe economic times than others.  I am sure the report will be better for PA soon!

Janice ~ I bet your kids had a great time at Lake Winapausaukee.. it is so beatuiful there.  Glad to hear they have made life-long friends in this beautitul part of the country.

Bill ~  Massachusetts did really well too... # 5... now that is great news!  Looks like Massachusetts and NH rock when it comes to kid friendly states!

I had not thought of such an award, but I guess that might be because I live in Nevada.  It is a great place for kids, but a better place for adults.  With all the top rankings it must be easy to sell people on the idea of relocating.

Jim ~  Nevada is a great place for children of all ages!  My college roommate grew up in Los Vegas and she loved it!

Hi Joan - I am surprised to find that California is just number 20.  This is a great state for kids, but with budget cuts to schools and parks, I guess it has slipped a bit.  Hopefully, the economy's hints of improvement will bring better news for us.

They look at employment for children? I thought modern child labor laws prevent that -- LOL.

I see Susan's comment #19 above mine. California's children seem to be employed in gangs and the drug trade. That doesn't count -- LOL.

Joan, that is wonderful!!!  I am almost afraid to go check where Oklahoma is... but I think I will check it out.  Thanks for stopping by my post on good things yesterday.  You've always got good things to report and say!

Jennifer ~  New Hampshire has had a challenge keeping younger people from leaving the state due to perceived or real job opportunities elsewhere.  Maybe reports like this will make some young adults think twice.

Susan ~  I guess that California still has some things going for it despite the challenges it faces with the budget!  I hope that things start to turn around.  I know the ARNOLD is working hard!

Jim ~  Your comment really made me laugh.  Too bad some of the energy expended with the gangs and drug trade can't be channeling into some more productive enterprises!

Judi ~  grew up in Tulsa... and it was a great place to be raised!  I still think Oklahoma is OK..

Hi Joan, I just read about this morning in our newspaper. I should clarify that. Here is the title of the newspaper article. " Just no way L>A>'s better for kid visits than S.D. is" by Michael Stetz. I had not read of this but the author of the article was stating that San Diego did not make the list at all. LA did. When I read your post, I realized it was in reference to the same thing. Very cool how all this works isn't it. Well Congratulations New Hampshire. I am sure the distinction is more than well deserved.

San Diego will just have to hang it's head in shame and forget about all the great beaches, and surfing and the Zoo and Wild Animal park and Sea World and Lego Land and the myriad of other things that kids like, like dirt bikes in the wilderness and even a Children's Museum, just for them. Maybe the next time they will do better.

William ~  I was unaware that the study was city by city... I'll have to go back and take another look.  California as a state came out very well.. #20...  I love San Diego and spent many summers as a kid enjoying most of those wonderful things you mentioned in your response.  I'm going back to take another look at the study... Hard to believe San Diego is not at the top of towns for kids :)!

Well why are there so many children at the San Diego Zoo each time I go, climbing all over everything so that it takes me 30 minutes to get one good picture? LOL

Russel ~ I love the San Diego zoo!  I also have gotten spoiled by the slide shows... it is the next best thing to being there and I don't have to stand in line :)!

Ann ~ sorry the report took so long to load... perhaps it was during a peak traffic time of day..We are excited that New Hampshire came up on top again!

This is an interesting report.  It is good that our children's interests are watched over carefully.  I think there a certainly mico-regions where things are good for kids that are not reflected in this report however.  While interesting, it also is very broad in its scope.
