Is Spamming A Mental Illness? Inquiring minds want to know because I keep hearing that insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.

If you spam on AR we will report you. Why do some of you keep doing it? Why do some of you spammers point fingers at other people when you get caught and chastised for it? Why not pay for your own website and spam yourself? How about start a spam network where you can preside over a twelve step program to amuse yourselves or self medicate your addiction to annoying the rest of us?

Go annoy yourself and leave the rest of us alone. We have work to do and don't want your comments tainting our blogs and filling up our mail boxes with your extreme stupidity. BTW, if you get spam email that you think is deceptive, forward it to spam@uce.gov. The FTC uses the spam stored in this database to pursue law enforcement actions against people who send deceptive email.

Spam in Blogs actually serves a purpose for the ones who do it who are not suffering from a mental illness. Here's the skinny on those calculating S.O.B.s if you Wiki it: "Spam in blogs (also called simply blog spam or comment spam) is a form of spamdexing. It is done by automatically posting random comments or promoting commercial services to blogs, wikis, guestbooks, or other publicly accessible online discussion boards. Any web application that accepts and displays hyperlinks submitted by visitors may be a target. Adding links that point to the spammer's web site artificially increases the site's search engine ranking. An increased ranking often results in the spammer's commercial site being listed ahead of other sites for certain searches, increasing the number of potential visitors and paying customers."

My advice: FLAG SPAM AND REPORT IT. DON'T JUST DELETE IT BECAUSE SPAMMERS MOMENTARILY ANNOYED YOU.

Reporting your concerns regarding inappropriate comment spam will help save our community by booting one jackass off at a time. You know who you are. Yes, I am talking to you. Get your grubby digital hands off my friggin' blog.

Here are a few very useful links regarding Spam:

http://www.ftc.gov/spam/

http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/microsites/spam/rules.htm

Federal Trade Commission Spam Press Room

Here's the thing: when you comment spam, you are also e-mail spamming because I have to read your crap twice when my automatic notifications send it over.

This is not link love. Quit it. You are not making friends and influencing people. You are treading on dangerous ground with the FTC and FCC if enough of us report you. Be happy we are just booting your nonsense off of our blog posts and this wonderful network and not bringing suit for the lost time incurred from constantly having to remove you and your nonsense from where it does not belong.

Don't make me call the Feds... I'm getting tired of deleting you. Seriously... Find another way to introduce people to your product and website. I am not interested in comment spam...

C - I suppose that for every 1 million spams sent out, one fish gives their credit card number. The slime feel this is "good" business. I just don't get it. Internet pollution is what it is. I pray for the day that this virus can be wiped from the Internet. Billions spent to prevent Internet Graffiti. I yearn for the day we can return 50 volts to a spammer's keyboard. Zapping would be such fun. All right ... I'll flag 'em and sic the Fed on them. Just like the 50 volt scenario

Connie, I am starting to think it's one particular person because of the diction in the nonsense. It's pretty consistent. Too bad we can't name names, eh? Oh well... I'll bust that nut job with the Feds if this keeps up (LOL).

Claude, more people fall for scams than you may think, which is why they don't stop.

Barb, it's a shame we have to devote so much time to making it stop, eh?

Papa, I am with you. My spammer is going post by post every single day. WTF, am I a fave bookmark or something? Geez... insane may be an understatement (LOL). BB, this nonsense has got to stop. Seriously...

Malita, spam works. That's why they try so hard to keep it going. Redirecting people from your Google juice s a free ride to a lazy marketer. You do all the hard work to get people to follow your blog and they start inserting links to draw people away. Lets say they cut and paste ten comments per member. That's over 1.5 million links we have to remove every single day. With 2 million plus visitors per month to our network, even if only 1% click per day, that's just way too many readers being sent elsewhere. How would you feel if you went to Disney and did a blog post about it and someone made a comment embedding a link on a word making you think it had something to do with Disney except it took your readers to a porn site? You'd be pissed off if people started e-mailing you angry letters about not moderating your blog post comments and their kids being exposed to that crap. My two kids blog with me all the time. I let them select the pictures. I let them help make the slides and movies by teaching them to drag and drop files into the editing time lines. They are always on our computers or somewhere nearby playing. See why I am ticked off? I don't like nasty surprises. If a commenter said say we could view a YouTube clip of his/her/their Disney vacation with his/her/their kids "here" I would expect to see that when I clicked on the word "here" and not something else to increase another website's ranking...

Centerline Homes, I thought about it for a hot minute, then didn't because a lot of my friends are not members and I never know when they are going to pop over and say hello. :-)

Thank you, Jason. It's been very annoying lately. I've been wondering what's up because it seems like AR is being targeted for a practice run resembling some sort of denial of service exercise. There has been a lot of cut and paste comments being issued making absolutely no sense whatsoever linking to all sorts of sites with pay per click advertising on them.

Chris, I know I am losing at least an hour a day double deleting from my email and blog posts. I am small potatoes compared to the hits others have taken. What I really hate is when I am in the street checking in and my e-mail is full of spam-crap on my cell phone.

11:04pm • #14

It's funny because I just had a comment left that was 100% spam advertising DVD box sets.  This stuff will happen.   That is why there is a delete option here.  The only good spam is the kind you can eat.

Spam is truly an annoyance and I remember when growing up (I'm 68!) the Spam I knew was great to eat!

If all humans would/could ignore them and not give them one iota of satisfaction they might go away.  Alas, that is not human nature and some unsuspecting humans keep feeding their sick habits and inspiring more spam!!

For me -- I keep wearing out my finger deleting, deleting as I believe a bureaucratic government intervention would simply make things worse!

Thanks C-Tann for a great rant that we all feel re spam.

don't delete it...  I repeat Do NOT delete.

I wondered if you were talking the outside spam or inside spam here.   The outside spam does not make me crazy...  well a little crazy when I was away from the computer and could not report it but could see it on my cell phone....  the stuff I saw yesterday did not have links in it.  How can a self respecting Somalian (or Syrian, Sumatran or someplace else) spammer post spam without a link?  This is business.  There are cybersweatshops with people cutting and pasting nonsense comments but why no links in the nonsense spam suddenly?

The spam that makes me crazy is the member spam.

Do not delete any of it...  Report a concern so AR can block the IP....

Katerina, have you highlighted some of them lately? If they use HTML they can make the link in white letters so you don't think there is a link there. Dean, the e-mail is just fascinating. I get the "free speech" "didn't mean any harm" lets see if we can feel her out crap as an explanation. I've had people argue they are just promoting their business like everyone else. I keep trying to tell people some writers don't mind links that continue and further a conversation but you have to get permission for it. Friends will let a friend do something they will not tolerate from a stranger, so saying someone else leaves links in the comment section is a moot point with me. Some people either don't get it or don't want to get it...
