Hernando MS Iconic Drive Thru - The Velvet Cream
by Pam Simpson
The Kudzu Vine
Just a block north of the Town Square on Highway 51 in Hernando Mississippi sits one of those special icons from another era. The Velvet Cream (called "The Dip" by the locals) has been serving up delicious food since 1947.
In addition to hamburgers and fries (which some say are THE BEST in the Mid-South), The Velvet Cream also serves up such concoctions as the Monster Burger (4 cheeseburger patty hamburger) and the Heartburn Hotel (smoked sausage with chili, cheese, onions, jalepeno pepers and mustard).
The Dip has 100 different flavors of milkshakes and I can personally attest to the fabulous ice cream cones!
It has been reported that Elvis Presley used to make the short drive from Graceland to Hernando to visit The Velvet Cream in the late 1950s. A couple of years ago, they celebrated their 60th anniversary and The Desoto Times wrote a great news article with lots of great stories from the present and past owners.

If you go to the Velvet Cream, be prepared to wait in line and to either take your food with you or eat in your car. There are no tables. You can either go through the drive-thru or to one of the walk-up windows. The parking lot is packed during the week-day lunch hour, but no one complains about the wait. It's worth it.
The hours of Monday - Saturday 9a.m. to 10p.m. and Sunday 10a.m. to 10p.m.
