When you wish upon a gold star...

Ahh, the coveted gold star at ActiveRain.  It's a mark of pride, a influx of new readers, commenters, and even points.  It's a good feeling.  My last two posts received a feature and they were about as different as monster trucks and the Grand Canyon.  I've been doing alright in the feature category since coming to ActiveRain, so I thought I'd take a few moments to analyze some of the things I've learned about ActiveRain Featured Posts.

1.  Don't be afraid to be yourself. - In one of my first featured posts, "Christmas morning and the silence.," I went for a personal glimpse into who I am.  It was a short post, but talked about the day as it laid out before me.  It was all about me and what I thought.  Give your insight, give your thoughts, tell us who you are.

2.  Call it like you see it. - We've all heard that honesty is the best policy (and if you're full of lies, you probably shouldn't be in the real estate industry), but when you step up and call it like you see it, you'll often find yourself surrounded by people who agree with you and will get a conversation going.  Think conversation starters.  You don't need to ask questions, just leave something in the air, waiting for the next member to come along, pluck it up, and run with it.

3.  Talk to your audience. - We wait for people to come along and comment on our posts, but what are our posts?  If there's no conversation or argument or agreement, we wind up with a dead post with few visitors.  To start a conversation, someone needs to speak first.  You have the stage, take that opportunity and speak up.  Talk as if you have a million readers, don't talk as if only one agent subscribes to your blog.  When they talk back (comment) you had better be ready to reply.

4.  Mix it up. - Many people recommend you talk about different thing - real estate and outside world things.  Yes, that is correct, but I'm also talking about mixing it up within your field.  Take the viewpoint of a buyer, take the viewpoint of a seller, take the viewpoint of a lender or inspector.  By viewing things from different angles, you can create a well-rounded view of the topic at hand.  I've actually been thinking about a specific post that will illustrate this idea.  We have both buyers and sellers reading our blogs, so why not look at the same topic from both of their viewpoints?  We all know they have to face different issues during a transaction, so use that to educate the consumer.

5.  Experience.  Hypothetical. - Talk from experience and talk in hypotheticals.  Both provide valuable insight into who you are as a member and both provide value to us members.  These are the things that get the conversation started and Featured Posts - they send conversation to a whole new level.  Sometimes a post will be featured solely on the conversation it creates.

6. Don't write for a feature. - Ask anyone who's ever been featured.  If you write it to be featured, it won't be.  It's the posts you least expect.

Always think "what am I bringing to the table with this post."  Ask "who will respond and how might they respond."  Ask yourself "how would I comment if I wrote this post."  Do you see the theme?  Get the conversation started.  Keep it going with your posts.  See a great post that gets you thinking?  Write a follow up to that author (and credit them with their article - a good way to make a few new friends).

And whatever you do...never think a post isn't worthy of a feature - you'll be surprised at what gets featured sometimes - "ActiveRain helped me find a long lost relative."

This is my first post in what I've decided to call the Ambassador Series.  The idea is to give some helpful hints that I've learned along the way for some of the newcomers (of which I am still a member and always will be).  They won't always contain the ultimate answer or the perfect solution, but they will be my thoughts and what I would (and often did) hear when I first started.  I encourage any of the ActiveRain Ambassadors to follow along and add their own stories and tips to the mix with their own posts.  Just title them "Ambassador Series: xxxxxxxxxxxxxx" (this will make them easier to find).  Perhaps someday someone can compile them all in one group.

You can read other Amabassador Series posts at "Ambassador Series: Writing with controversy." and "Ambassador Series: Are you a new blogger and feeling unsure? (RE-BLOG)."

Greg - I live by that rule for the most part.  It may not always be for everyone at times, but if I'm spending time being afraid to be myself, I'm not being productive.

I was featured . . . once.  It's good to see the gold star, but hard work -- a responsive blogger will address each comment.  That's a lot of work!  I don't know how Lenn does it all the time!

Carla - I do try to address them all, but sometimes when the feature gets big, it's hard to reply to everyone (especially when many of the comments are similar).  I've learned to let go a bit and write a general comment at times.

Greg, thanks for a great blog.  I have been featured... once and it is great to see the gold star.  Some people just have all the stuff.

June - Greg does have a pretty awesome blog.  Haha.  Couldn't resist (I see that so many times and always take the bait).  I don't think it's about "some people" - I truly think anyone can do it...if they dig deep and write for the conversation more than just "info giving" (although they get featured too).

Lane - I can't remember which post it was recently that I thought might be so good, they might feature it twice.  Instead, it went mostly un-noticed.  When I see what they feature though, I often can find something about it that makes me say "oh, that makes sense."

Meekly I add my comment to this star-studded set (wow, you guys have LOTS of points and LOTS of stars!!): as a relative newbie here, I like the element of chance in when I happen to be on, too. When I can read all blogs that pop up when I'm logged in, as well as the featured ones, it gives me such perspective!  AR has a great bunch of members!

And Matt, I love the photo of the wall of stars :)

I think that there will be a very loud echo with #6, Matt. But doing the other five in order to avoid doing #6, aye, that'll take some doing, I tell ya. But it will be well worth it, not only to the writer, but also for all those who happen to find it, wthere they be AR members or the consumers.

It is interesting to see a post on how to get featured that says posters should take a position and not be afraid of controversy.

right after reading one with a gazillion comments complaining about how impolite it is to disagree with with the original poster.

Methinks the rule seems to be:  Be controversial but avoid controversy like the plague.

Matt - I have only been on AR for two week, actually it will be two weeks this Friday.  I had a Blog featured in my first week and didn't even know what it was when I saw the star next to my blog.  I am not a big blogger and only started doing this because one of my KW friends said it would be good for my business.  I am not sure of that though as about 1/2 the peope who commented didn't like what I had to say, :)

Interestesting!

I don't know if I will get too many more of those gold stars but I will continue to speak with passion and if I am lucky maybe a few more will earn Gold Stars.

Good Stuff   ------  Thanks for sharing your wisdom.

Make today your best day ever.

Hi Matt, enjoyed the read.  Always trying to learn new things here in the RAIN.

We were wondering who picks what posts will be featured?

Also, how long does it take for the gold star to appear.  We were featured on July 7th this year, the star appeared, when you moused over it, it said "0", later disappeared.

Chris - I thought of the idea of the series after I wrote the article.  I almost posted it without the "Ambassador Series" idea at all, but it came to me at the very end.  I think it could be a great idea for all of us to try and help out and truly be Ambassadors.

Loreena - Please, call me Mr. A.

Shoshana - Bryn Mawr College?  I used to live in the Philadelphia suburbs as well (Norristown), so I was amazed to see someone who attended there.  ActiveRain only proves to me that the world is smaller than I already thought.

Roland - If I had a star for everytime I thought I wrote a great post, you wouldn't know who Jason Crouch is, that's for sure!  Haha.

Christine - It is always a good feeling to be featured.  Especially when it generates a conversation.

William - #6 almost didn't exist.  I think to work with groups of five, but I thought it was important enough to add a #6.

Carol - I just took a look through your blog.  Keep writing like that and the stars will come.  Try a good opinion piece.  Write something about real estate that you really hate/love.  Be open and honest with your audience.  Don't be afraid to say that you disagree with something.  Talk to your buyers and sellers the way you would when they're feeling nervous or scared.

Jim - I welcome dissention on my blog.  If there's no disagreement, there's no change of opinion.  If there's no change in opinion, we all become one boring like-mind.

John - Just read your post.  I think that's awesome that it's working for you.  Check out Clint Miller's latest, "Guerilla Marketing -- Daring To Be Different" for a look at how thinking a little differently can be useful.  It may not be the method for others, but if it works for you, it's the way to go.

Harry - Someone needs to write this on a stone tablet for all of time to see - Always give quality content to your audience.

Irene - I'm always open to suggestions for topics too!

Al and Peggy - The ActiveRain staff often picks posts as they come out, but members also flag content for features too.  I often read a post that speaks to me in one way or another and I flag it with a good reason why I think it should be featured.  Not sure about the timing of the stars...the initial star to the post should appear immediately.  The "total number of features" image under your name when you comment?  That sometimes isn't immediate I've noticed.  I would write to someone at ActiveRain and ask them what happened on the featured/not featured post.  Maybe there was a glitch?

Sheila - You keep making me learn and getting me to push myself and remain excited about what I'm doing and I guarantee I'll keep sharing!  (Sounds like I get the easy part of that job.)

Dude...Nice post!!  I have always prided myself on being brutally honest, completely transparent, and entertaining.  I dont think that Im that talented of a writer.  But, I believe that anyone can do this if I can. ;-)

My advice to new bloggers....write.  Write what your stream of consciousness wants to write.  Write about what you know...or want to know.  Write about your cat, your hat, the dog, the fog, a cane, the rain...Whatever.  But....write.

I was featured once and of course I was thrilled.  Funny tho, the featured post didn't seem to be my best post in my mind.

There really isn't any rhyme or reason to these featured posts ..... I can't figure it out at all quite frankly. I notice that over and over the same people get the "Featured Posts!!"

Matt -

You've done a great job of capturing many key points that writers should keep in mind when writing in general anyhow. I would add that you shoul dadd visual interest - color, photos, video, graphs, that complement the post and make it more appealing.

The reality is that what gets featured varies tremendously, and selections are made by a number of people who thsemselves have differeing opinions on what makes a post featurable. We are also seeing more consumer posts getting featured which is great - so often it is only the posts written for AR.

Nevin - I have to say I think many people don't give themselves enough credit when it comes to their writing.  Yes, everyone is not William Shakespeare, but blog writing isn't exactly the same either.  My trick?  I write in a William Burroughs-esque stream of conciousness.  I don't plan and plot for too long.  I just sit down and bang it out - works for me.  The key is to write as yourself - don't kill yourself about the a-b-c of writing that you learned in 8th grade.  No one is a perfect writer (by the rules), but perfection can be found in honest writing from your perspective.

Jeff - I never realized just how many featured posts you've acquired.  Yikes.  I better get to work.  Haha.

Mike - Even if you're blogging to an audience of zero, blog as if you're talking to someone.  Conversational blogging is a great way to get started.  I've asked many questions in posts that have gone unanswered, but my asking them, I know someone might read them and start thinking of the answer.

Hi Matt, I found this post by clicking from another of you well written posts and have been at AR only rarely in the last couple of months. This is very, VERY good! I am not really a "writer" but admire the writing capabilities of others like yourself. I like what you say about writing for yourself and not trying to geat a feature. Frankly I am more of what Charles Bukowski calls a "typer" but I just try and tell a story. After a year I've only managed to post 75 times but several have been featured and that's cool. I just don't want to waste my yime with something useless! Well Funny maybe but not posting  just to post!
