On my way home from work I decided to make a stop at MJ's Fresh Market.  I wasn't feeling well, and some farm fresh fruit sounded like just what the doctor ordered.

Proprietor Mary Jo Poteet was as friendly as you would imagine the person who operates a seasonal fruit stand to be.  She chatted about her fruit, her business and her fondness for her wonderful parents who have a fruit stand further north in town. 

Mary Jo brings her produce from the Yakima and Columbia Valleys in Washington State.  I perused the offerings.  A week of heat approaching 100' made for some bargains on boxes of fresh peaches.  I would have snapped up a couple boxes to can if I could have foreseen a block of time this coming week to devote to that project.  I did score some apricots, nectarines, baby red potatoes, tomatoes, onions and cantaloupe. 

I couldn't help notice a sign on a flower rack. $1.00/Flat.  Was that really just $1.00 for an entire flat of flowers, including geraniums in 4" pots?  Sure enough, it was.  It was my lucky day!  I have three big ceramic pots on my front steps.  They are lovely, and conspicuously empty!  I have been meaning to find something to plant in them...  SCORE!

MJ's Fresh Market opens in May with flowers and asparagus and closes out the season at Halloween with apples and pumpkins.  Last year, for the first time Mary Jo sold fresh cut Christmas trees, and plans to do it again.

My pleasant visit over, I headed for home, munching on an apricot and feeling better for having stopped.  Next time you are driving on Government Way, just south of Appleway, stop by MJ's Fresh Market.  Pop in and say hello, and tell her Janna sent you!
