The Yellow Stone!

The following photo was taken on June 29, 2009 in Yellowstone National Park.

Seen in the background of the photo are the Lower Falls of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.

In the foreground, is the Yellow Stone of Yellowstone!   I could not help but notice how yellow it was.

Gerry, I have to ask - what makes the stone yellow?

Gerry my wife worked at Yellowstone for a summer after graduating high school and the first time she took me to the park I asked her if there were really yellow stones, and she took me to the exact spot you took your picture from! I believe there is a higher amount of some mineral in that area of the park that makes them yellow.

Maria,

The name Yellowstone is thought to come from a translation of the Native American Minnetaree word mi tsi a-da-zi, for the yellow cliffs along the Yellowstone River.   I actually had to do a bit reasearch to come up with an answer which is I believe the yellow is the result of limestone http://www.recordcourier.com/article/20070708/Community/107080009

Dan,

That is a great summer or full time job to have working at Yellowstone.  During a recent visit to Yellowstone, a Park Ranger told me she had the best job in the world and I believed her.   Limestone is mainly composed of the mineral Calcite.  Thanks for dropping by to comment.

That's a pretty awesome display of nature in your photo. I like how the river cuts through the canyon like a bright white ribbon.

Hi Gerry - You keep coming up with more and more fantastic scenic photos.  This one is absolutely beautiful.  I don't think I've ever seen yellow stones of the type in your photo before.
