Just Enjoying an Afternoon in the Sun

We saw these 2 alligators at Busch Gardens, Tampa, Florida's Largest Zoo.

Alligators are found mostly in the southeast United States including Florida and Louisiana. There are over a million alligators in each state. The state of Louisiana has the largest population of alligators in the US.

The average alligator is 13 feet long and 800 pounds. Some get bigger than a thousand pounds.  Alligators can live to 50 years.

The trainers were in the cage with these 2 gators when I snapped the picture.

Sandy You can have the gators. We get an occasional pet that gets to big and the owner sets it free...

Sandy, While I was visiting Florida one huge one had decided to cross the road....it took them HOURS to remove him!  It was facinating to me, actually :)

Ann, I'm with you. He looks scary to me also!

Paul, I suppose gators are here to stay in Florida. Here, people buy them from small pet stores, and when they get too big, they flush them down the toilets or let them out in a nearby pond or lake - it's not a good situation.

Hi Lou, This was feeding time for this gator. Although we walked up just as they finished feeding these two.

Hi Miss Mary, Oh no, I sure hope that you don't get nightmares because of my gator picture.  I remember when you posted about the mountain lion, and I thought -oh my gosh, I can't even imagine having one of those around here - too funny.

Hi Gary, They sure do get big.  I know, you're a Florida Gator, (but not one that looks like that big guy - hahahahaha).

Carole, Occasionally in other parts of the state they find one in the middle of the road, sometimes around the Everglades, but not real often around here. We see one here or there every once in a while.  And they are fascinating.

Caren, I prefer to keep my distance from these big guys also.  They are a bit intimidating.

I'm always so amazed to see how fast and swiftly one of those critters can move when they want to.  Looking at this one, it looks like it would take a ton of effort for him to wiggle his tail:-)
