We recently Staged a beautiful, architectural home in Oxnard, CA. The home had been on the market for a time with little interest, so the Owners & Realtor called Platinum Home Staging, Inc. to come in, Stage the home and make sense of it's awkward floor plan.

However, the Owners wanted to be present while we worked our magic. We politely explained that they would probably get a bit overwhelmed by everything that goes on "behind the scenes" as we Staged the home, and it would better to come back for the "big reveal" later that day.

But for those interested, here is a sneak-peak "behind the scenes" of just one room in the home. You'll notice the gradual progression of furniture, accessory bins, placements, etc. It was hard to get the pictures lined up to match perfectly, and even harder to remember to take the pictures randomly through-out the day.

Hi Connie,  What a fun post!  It's always so much easier and a lot quicker to stage while the homeowners (and their neighbors and friends) are not in the house watching your every move.  We usually tell people that it will be a lot more fun for them if they come back to the house when we are totally done staging as they will get the most impact that way.  We also tell them that it is really boring to watch the process and they might want to spend their valuable time doing other things they have planned for the day.

Connie ~ It's so distracting if the client is onsite during the staging process.  Like many others, our contract states no one can be present, but if they happen to stop by, we just try to convince them to return later so they can see the final outcome.  Besides it's so much more fun for us to "reveal" the staged rooms isn't it?

I agree, Diana, so many people think it "would be fun" to watch....watching a bunch of people running up & down stairs with furniture & accessories is nothing "exciting" ;)

I love the big "reveal" too, Maureen.  In this case we didn't Stage ALL of the guest bedrooms, and one of the daughters got a little upset when she saw how beautiful her sister's room had turned out, but that we hadn't Staged her old room.

Connie, fun post and quite a task remembering as you said to take the photos.  BUT a good illustration of the work stagers do.  Now to get the crew lifting, bending, carrying and hauling things in and out of the truck and up the three flights of stairs, for the REAL picture ehhh???   Have a great week.

Hopefully the homeowners heeded your advise and didn't stay to watch.  And thanks for sharing the photos.  I've been planning to create a video of one whole project from start to finish that would show the entire process.  You've inspired me to get moving on that!!!

Aloha Connie,

Great idea for a post. I deal mostly with investor clients, through a management company so there is little chance of an audience in most cases but I have had a couple of home owner clients that have poked around while we staged. It didn't take them very long to figure out it was better to stay out of the way, hehehe.

Peace,

What a great idea, Connie, to take the pictures throughout the process.  The room turned out wonderful!

Love your post-- what a great idea!  I can see where it would be hard to remember to take pics in the midst of staging.  I get so into it, I sometimes even forget to take a "before!"  This was an awkward layout but the room turned out beautifully.  Thanks for sharing!

Hi Connie-  That is so great.  I love how you did that video.  I work much better when the client is NOT there too.  There is too much going on and I always move things around about 10 times before I get it where I want it.  Great job on a beautiful home.

Grrrrr I posted comments to each & every one of you & then AR froze up & I lost it all...ggggrrrrr

Thank you everyone, I'm glad you like it.  It WAS hard to remember to take the pictures (approx. every 45 min) as well as making sure that they were lined up as much as possible.  I have someone who wants to do a time lapse video of an upcoming installation ~ I think we're all going to look like little ants. =)

great idea!! very original..I'm with Michele I'm lucky if I remembered the camera.

I thought it was me but so so many clients want to be there when we stage, they think it will be fun to watch. I politely ask no one be on site until we are done but they show up anyway. After the hours tick by you can see they became exhausted just watching and they remember why they hired you in the first place.

It would be horrible to stage with the owners present.  My grunting and groaning would make them think that I'm a million years old.   Then I talk to myself and answer myself.   NO WAY do I want visitors.

P.S.  great job

Connie- in agreement with everyone about not having the owners present during staging.  I loved the progression of the pictures.  I always take my camera but I'd have to set some kind of timer to remind me to take them the way you did.  How did you do it?  Set a timer?  Great post.
