Hi Everybody.  Summer's here and while we all want to kick back and relax and enjoy our summer activities or head "down the shore" (a south Jersey colloquialism!) there's a few things that we should keep in mind to keep our families safe during the busy summer months.

Summer Activities are a blast! But without the right safety equipment, they can become dangerous.  Take heed: make sure that your children are always safe and protected when enjoying summer activities.

Have your children always wear protective head gear when bicycling, skateboarding, rollerblading or riding their scooters, dirt bikes or ATV's.  A properly-fitted helmet can mean the difference between enjoying a summer day of fun or spending hours in the emergency room. I think I know which path I want to choose!

Be sure to limit the amount of time your child or infant is in direct sunlight -especially during the danger-zone hours of 10am - 2pm.

Apply sunscreen religiously -- even on cloudy days (something I keep having to remind the staff at my child's summer camp!). Sunscreen should be re-applied every two hours and after a swim.

Home playground equipment such as trampolines, swingsets, sandboxes, etc should be placed on shock-absorbant surfaces. And always be sure to supervise children while they're at play -even in your own backyard.

Teach children about the dangers of the backyard grill.  Never leave a grill in use, unattended when there are children playing nearby.  Never allow children near the grill when you are cooking, lighting it or handling coal or the propane tank.

Install window guards in all windows on your home that are higher than 3 feet off the ground. This will help to prevent children from falling out of windows.  Install them in any room where children spend time or have access.  Do not depend upon window screens to keep children safe from a fall. They are not designed for weight loads and will not fulfill this purpose.

All for now! Tomorrow I'll cover water safety tips.  See ya here tomorrow!
