Bright Sun with StreaksUnder the file of "I don't have enough to worry about in my life today" comes news from MidwestBusiness.com that I now need to worry about solar "superstorms" that will cause multi-state blackouts, make satellites fall from the sky, cause "economic devistation" and...

*gasp*

Disrupt my cell phone service -- for an extended period of time!

The news comes from Purdue University Physics experts and the predicted ETA for these storms is in five years... in 2012. Read more about the historical precedent for these storms (back before we were so dependent on disruptable technology) and the predictions for the next solar superstorm for this century.

THESE are the things that help me to reconcile my two opposing urges (one to be totally high tech and the second to move back to my VERY rural farm and live life completely "off grid"). *sigh*

Angela, my mistrust because of the vulnerability of electronic systems is why I periodically print out updates of essential data.  I've already lost months of work in the past, due to much less exotic causes.

If you want another potential threat to worry about, I have read that an nuclear bomb eexplosion, even if far enough away to not damage the area, would emit a huge electromagnetic pulse that could wipe out hard drives, plus all your data and music on tapes.

I suppose a good plan would include backing your data (and music) onto DVDs that would not be affected.

The question should be "can w do anything about it".  If not, guess I will leave the worrying to you.  Thanks for keeping us informed.
