The Least Of These

"And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!'  Matthew 25:40

Several days ago, a friend of mine, Jared, was filling up his big diesel truck at the corner station. He was grumbling to himself about how much of his unborn children's college tuition was going into his gas tank. Oh, he loves his big 4x4 truck, but he hates to part with the money it takes to feed it's ravenous apetite. Just as he was finishing up, an old beat up station wagon pulled up to a nearby pump. A somewhat haggard, tired-looking woman got out and proceeded to put some gas in her car. She had only gotten a couple of bucks in it when she stopped the pump and headed into the store to pay.

Just then, Jared heard the Lord speak to him. "Fill that woman's car up with gas", commanded the silent voice in Jared's heart. Jared, a life-long Christian, was used to listening for God's voice but he wasn't real sure about this one. "Lord", said Jared, "You saw how much it cost me to fill up my truck!" Apparently, God wasn't impressed. "Fill that woman's car up with gas" repeated God. Jared, the faithful servant, called out to the woman just as she was entering the store to plunk down her two bucks.

"Ma'am, this is going to sound a liitle crazy but...will you let me fill up your car for you?". he asked. She looked at him with a mix of suspicion and curiosity. "Why would you want to do that?", she replied. Jared answered her, "Well, God told me to, that's why." The woman pondered it for a moment and then said, "Sure...thank you!" Jared walked to her car, filled up her gas tank and went in to pay for both purchases.

When he returned to his truck, the woman was standing there, waiting to thank him. "You're not going to believe this", she said. "That was the last two dollars I had to my name. I'm really going through some tough times and that was all I had. How did you know?"

"I didn't know, ma'am. But God did. Thank you for letting me serve you."

These are some tough times each of us are going through. Nobody I know has been spared in this recession. Jobs lost, hours cut back, budgets slashed. It's been a tough swamp to slog through and we're all slogging through it. Maybe sometimes we think of ourselves as the hardest hit. Maybe we allow self-pity to creep into our minds. Maybe even a little greed as we struggle to keep ourselves afloat financially.

It's easy to forget that no matter how hard it is for each of us these days, there are always those who are suffering more; the least among us.

Jesus teaches us that He wants us to serve those who have less, just as He did during His ministry. Jesus served the sick, the down-trodden, the cast outs of society. The least among these. His message was clear then and more relevant today than ever. Our worth is not about money or wealth or an accumulation of things. Our worth is our love and service to those who need us. Jesus demonstrated His love by serving the least among society.

By serving the least of these, we are truly serving God.

We all need to be more aware of His "still, small voice". It's too easy to forget that we live for Him. And He wants us to -love one another, as He loves us-.

I would have to agree that we get so caught up with our own issues, that we walk by witnessing opportunities that have far greater needs ! It is crucial to start each day feeding on the Word and leaving your house talking to Him !

Trey and Michael ~ Thanks for stopping by. I love stories like this one, and and even more so to pass them on. My only wish is that more people paid attention to that quite, still voice that speaks to us.
