Sotterly Plantation!
Older than Mount Vernon, older than Monticello, older than the nation itself, Sotterley Plantation stands majestically on the banks of the Patuxent River. It is the only remaining Tidewater Plantation in Maryland that is open to the public with a full range of visitor activities and educational programs. Sotterley's significant architecture features the early 18th-century Mansion, a rare original slave cabin, and a full array of outbuildings set amidst 95 acres of rolling fields, gardens, and riverfront. Visit Sotterley Plantation. Learn about educational programs, wedding or special events, a bit of history, photo gallery of now and then & news and events year round.

Fred Tutman Patuxent Riverkeeper Environmental Economics & Environmental Justice Friday, August 21 7:00 p.m. in the Barn
Fred Tutman shares how our values and economic system transfer the wealth of our public rivers into private hands, leaving the public to pay the bill for the inevitable cleanups and how citizen advocates like Riverkeepers are restoring power to those most affected by profit-based pollution. With decades of cleanups, billions of dollars and numerous compacts, treaties, agreements and accords, the Chesapeake Bay is worse than ever. The Patuxent River generally gets a "D-" on most report cards describing tributary water quality. With years of extensive involvement within the environmental field, Fred's dedication was born and nurtured here in Southern Maryland.

An Archaeology Program for Sotterley? A Panel Discussion
Sunday, September 20, 2009
3:00 p.m. in the Barn
Sotterley Plantation is rich in archaeological sites, some dating thousands of years ago, others to the period when the Mansion and Slave Cabin were occupied, and still others to the 20th century. The question arises, should these sites be excavated or are they best left untouched? Join three renowned archaeologists as they describe the archaeological research done to date at Sotterley Plantation, what this archaeology has revealed, and then debate the future of archaeology at the site. Panelists will take "sides" to emphasize the issues at stake, and the audience will be invited to weigh in with their thoughts.
