Field Day parade features TV-show theme in 69th year By: Stephanie Prokop, Staff Writer 06/07/2007

MANSFIELD-Although organizers took the "field" out of Mansfield Field Day, the 69th annual township event is instead focusing on a parade as the main centerpiece of the day.
The parade will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday and will follow the same route as last year, beginning at East Main Street (right next to the park exit) to the Grouser Farm on West Main Street and then back into the town to end at the municipal park.
The parade will feature four bands that will march and play favorite tunes. The special events committee encourages all floats, marchers and antique cars to enter the parade.
"We have church groups, softball teams, and fire companies participate in the parade," said one of the event's organizers, Grace Fennimore, "and it's a lot of fun."
Last year, the Field Day event focused on healthy eating, and organizers for the event made sure that there were plenty of fruit cups and salads on hand.
This year, Grace Fennimore said the special events committee wanted to do something a little bit different and just focus on the parade.
The theme for this year's parade floats is TV Shows. The special events committee encourages everyone who is interested in marching to register as soon as possible by calling Ms. Fennimore at (609) 324-8110.
Barbara Crammer, who is also a member of the special events committee, is excited to see what kind of creative ideas that participants will have for the parade.
The parade will also feature Mansfield Township Grand Marshal Dick Archer, who was recently awarded a proclamation from the township for 50 years of his EMS service to the township.
Next year, event organizers will approach a milestone - the 70th Field Day. Ms. Crammer is already trying to get the word out if anyone is interested in helping the special events committee in beginning to prepare next year's festivities.
"The 70th Field Day is just a nice, round number, and we really just want to bring the day back into the park and have a lot of field activities," she said.
Another annual tradition is the Lil' Miss Columbus, a contest in which residents filled out ballots casting their vote for any girl in kindergarten through sixth grade. Ms. Fennimore said that this year, the winner is Gianna Alessi, a fourth-grader at Mansfield Elementary School. She is scheduled to be the guest of honor in the parade, and will be crowned and presented with flowers at noon Saturday in the gazebo.
The special events committee is excited for the parade and is all set to "make this a great parade for our community.
Although there are no planned activities in the park, residents are encouraged to come on out to watch several baseball games that will be going on. The concession stand will also be open.
Ms. Crammer said that if anyone is interested in helping with either this year's parade or setting up a committee for next year's Field Day, they can contact the Mansfield Municipal Building at (609) 298-0542, ext. 10.
