When did everything become so black and white? Are there not gray areas in life? Can we not go outside of the margins to take a closer look?

I posted a post to my blog a while back that detailed the story of a family in need here in South Florida. Through my post, I've had the pleasure of meeting Marilyn Mock of the Foreclosure Angel Foundation(FAF).  She truly is an Angel as she seeks out to help people in true need. She's been featured on 20/20, Oprah, Good Morning America and others as being a truly caring individual. She'll go to a foreclosure Auction and buy a home back for a family. She had heard of the same family that I had posted on and through her online efforts she found me - lucky me.

Together we have been searching for a home for this family.  Well I found what we thought to be the perfect home in the Condominium community of Bermuda Club in Tamarac Florida.  I presented the offer to the Seller, they accepted and on to the Association. The application was completed by the family who the FAF was buying the home for...yes, the FAF was going to purchase the home for the family and the only thing that they would have to pay is their monthly association fees; no problem. Their debt to income ratio would be fine as they had no mortgage payment or rent payment.  But guess  what..........

The Association said he didn't qualify as he just didn't earn enough money to live in the Golden Castle of the Bermuda Club. Believe me it was far from a Golden Castle, yet the Association run by  a group of resident volunteers

said "NO" you're not moving in here!

They knew the complete story of this family and of the Foreclosure Angel Foundation stepping in to help. This family has gone through life threatening medical illnesses that have wiped their savings out. After years of hard work this is now how they're facing their retirement. A hard working and honest man now in a position of not knowing what he'll do when he's thrown from his current home to foreclosure. The story is long yet his home cannot be saved for him.

A local Home Depot had even  agreed to donate supplies to complete the condo as it was in the midst of a renovation never completed. So you see, everybody was coming together EXCEPT the Condo Commanders, again being heartless ... couldn't see beyond the black and white.  Life is not simply black and white.

Needless to say, I've since found another home, just today in fact, and I'm off to see a Condo Association again.  They all cannot be heartless can they?

The more you know, the better prepared, the better the outcome.

Lynn- This is very sad. Condo associations can be so heartless, prejudiced, uncaring, and commando style. I am glad you found this family a home.

The details being what they are, the condo manager should be hung out to dry.

Yes, they can be that heartless. You see, condominiums must enforce the CC&R's and rules consistently in all situations, or their rules can be seen as discriminatory and deemed invalid. Since this association does have a rule on the books regarding income guidelines, it must be enforced.

Sad? Truly! Necessary? Absolutely. This association must enforce their written policies.

I would question whether there really is a rule on the books with a dollar amount that residents must receive as income. And whether it was the residents or a separate property management company, I feel the family is lucky they discovered how heartless the condo association can be. It would have been far worse to have moved in and then had to live with these heartless people.

Katerina, yes, thank goodness that things have a way of working themselve out.

Edward....incredible isn't it?!

Vicky, no I'm sorry but I can't agree with you.  I'd say deciding on whether or not somebody is qualified according to their income is discriminatory as this in by no means necessary. If we had more time and money we could have an Attorney address this and go after them. Imagine our world if everyone lacked compassion?

Gary, you're right as we're lucky it didn't work out as who would want to live there?!

That is horrible.  I had some ex-FL resident clients who said that the condo association president made them miss out of 2 sales.  He denied 1 contract because they required a background check for all residents and the 35 year old man had been convicted of shoplifting at the age of 17.

Sad story on society.  Sounds a bit legalistic to me.  I commend you for your effort in helping this family.

The rules on everything are resetting right now.  While I understand the reason for the rules, as they may have been originally written; it would not surprise me in the least to see many HOA's (across the nation) modify their rules to reflect the economic makeup of their residents.    It is a shame that with that public opportunity to show off their project, the rules were not re-written to enable this family to live there.    The condo would have received very positive press PLUS be prepared (ahead of time) for any other tenants that may fall into this situation.    They could have been the right kind of spin on "being the right kind of place to live".  Their loss.

Christine and Jennifer, exactly....when did it all become so black & white when there are rules? Shoplifting at age 17...come on!

Irene, thank you! I'm still trying with them too. I hope that I can report back good news.

Cathy, yes you're right they could have received some great press had they chosen to do the right thing.
