Kitsap County WA Homeowner Helper: Dealing with Paint Disposal Problems

Okay, so you've just moved into your new home here on the beautiful Kitsap Peninsula in scenic Washington State (hopefully sold by me!), or maybe you're getting ready to relocate somewhere else (why anyone would ever leave here is beyond me. But if you need to, give me a call!)

The Problem: You've got cans and cans of old, used paint lying around, taking up lots of space. Being the environmentally-conscious person that you are, you want to dispose of it properly. What do you do?

Fortunately, there's a really great solution!

The Kitsap County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility

Located at 5551 SW Imperial Way, Port Orchard (off Hwy. 3 across from the Bremerton National Airport)

The facility is open Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, from 10AM to 4PM (Map/Driving directions)

Now here's the cool part, it's FREE! Yes, that's right, it's FREE! If you have any of the typical household hazardous waste items - paint products, fertilizers, household cleaners, automotive products - you can bring them to the facility. Just pull up to the door, the staff will unload them, and you will sign an affidavit stating your name and address to verify that the items are household waste, and not business-related.

How cool is that? Don't wait for your wife to complain AGAIN about the garage being such a pit. Be 'green' AND clean, all at the same time!

After getting stuck with 24 cans of almost empty paint cans that a seller left, I now send a postcard to all my sellers reminding them to dispose of that stuff prior to closing. It isn't quite as convenient here to dispose of it. I love when the sellers say they thought the buyers could use the stuff. hmmmm. Right.

Linda - you are always so kind to frequent my articles. Thank you! I just sold a home here in Silverdale, and the Buyers asked me if I could dispose of a bunch of paint. My Sellers had alread moved out of state. Fortunately, it was fairly painless to satisfy their request. Everyone's happy!

Or you can do what I do. Advertise it free on craigslist. I get rid of paint and a lot of other stuff that way. Easier than hauling it off myself.

Some people collect paint of any color until they have enough to paint something. Then as long as it all latex or something, they mix it together and paint...the color is a surprise. It's true, It's true :-)

Good tip Rich. I got lots of it, but what I have got is mine, and I cannot part with it, of course.

I'm with Marty. This is a good thing happening in your area. But it's also opportunity for you to market yourself. There is an agent on A.R. who shows up with a truck, banners and bottled water. He rolls up his sleeves and helps out as well, the entire time his banner is on the side of his truck.

Rich, thank you for the reminder. I have a bunch of cans with old paint in my garage, so I guess that it is time to take a trip to our hazardous waste collection facility.

We have had a similar problem in Thurston County, not yet fixed. The County has made it so difficult to get rid of hazmat, old appliances etc. that many people just dump stuff in the woods rather that dealing with the hassle.

How cool is that? I wonder if we have a simular program here? Sounds like something I need to look into, I have a lot of paint left over in the storage room from when we painted the outside of the house. Thanks Rich!

most people just jam them into a garbage bag and fill them with other refuse... then they sit in a landfill and contaminate the landfill...

I acquired a large quantity of latex paint when we took over a foreclosure home. I still have the paint since King County no longer accepts latex paint because they consider it hazardous. Don't know what to do?

From KC website...."Latex paint is no longer considered hazardous waste and beginning on January 1, 2008, the household hazardous waste facilities in King County (the Bellevue-Factoria facility and the Wastemobile) will no longer accept latex paint. The Seattle household hazardous waste facilities will not accept latex paint from King County residents beginning January 1, 2008."
