A New York Feng Shui Bathroom....What NOT to Do by Feng Shui Long Island

As a Feng Shui Consultant in New York, I am asked many questions about Good-and Bad Feng Shui.  The clients in this home in Suffolk County Long Island New York had previously been advised by a Feng Shui Consultant to demolish an existing bathroom and build another---right in the KITCHEN area of their home.

Needless to say, I was a bit shocked to hear this.  And concerned.  The Energy of a Kitchen in Feng Shui is meant to nourish.  The Energy of a bathroom in Feng Shui is for elimination and drains....clearly conflicting Energies.

They were told that their home on Long Island New York would not support them with their present bathroom.  It is important to note that Mr. Client is a very successful businessman and his wife (they had successfully raised two children in this home!) was a stay at home mother.

They didn't have a clear reason why their previous New York Feng Shui Consultant gave them this information but clearly they were worried about it.  I walked the home with them going into each room and from the Methods of Feng Shui that I know and use, could find nothing wrong with the location of the old bathroom.

Mr. Client clearly understood why I strongly advised against a bathroom opening up into the kitchen.  No matter how hard I tried, Mrs. Client was insistent.  To date, I hadn't heard back from them.

The following is a photo of one client who had such an issue.  The refrigerator is on the right and I'm standing near the kitchen table.  These clients WANTED to renovate and were eventually able to add another bathroom elsewhere in the house and use with a little remodeling, had a wonderful new pantry.

I don't think I would want one in my kitchen anyway. That's like night and day in the same room lol. Can't have two opposites together.

That seems like a given, Feng Shui or not, but I guess if someone has put their blind faith in another, they did not need an explanation.  That's not how I function, (I need the why's answered!) but I know that there are those that follow that school of thought... "the expert" knows...

Carole, this started my day with a chuckle - what an apt compariston. Two worlds same function :)

Gee ... do you really need a Feng Shui consultant to tell you that a bathroom in your kitchen is a bad idea?  How many guests do you know, would get up from the dinner table and use that bathroom, while other people sat at the table?  How  uncomfortable for everyone.... not to mention smelly.

A million dollar home I was in not that long ago, had a 2 piece bathroom inside the kitchen across from the breakfast bar.  So, if you stood at the sink, talking to your guests at the breakfast far, you would actually be facing the toilet, if the bathroom door was open.  I suggested to my client that the space would be great for a wine cooler/rack, within a pantry.   I wonder who designs these homes.

Carole--In many turn of the century homes (1900-1920), the pantries were converted to bathrooms on the main floor when plumbing was brought into the home. We lived in one such house and hated it! In our home now the half bath opens to the hallway right off the kitchen. Can't imagine someone suggesting going directly into the kitchen as the BEST place for a bathroom unless there is NO other option!

Carole

Kind of frightening, and I hope the ventilation is good. I never thought about it but I can see the real paradox this would present.

Sally, I couldn't get through and to this day don't know how she didn't understand it.

Cheryl, Funny, I need the Why's answered too.  You are exactly right, it didn't take Feng Shui, it's just common sense to me.

Janice, I'm glad you got  a chuckle out of it.  i was horrified at the thought!  :)

Missy, I wonder what your buyers would think about this...think it might deter them just a bit?

Sylvie, She had it stuck in her head that the KITCHEN was the place for the new bathroom.  I am certain her husband must have talked her out of it, he knew exactly what I was saying.

Teri, This wasn't one of those old homes...not that old, anyway, it was built in the 50's.  I remember my brother living in a cottage once where the bathroom came right into the kitchen ( I only stayed with him one time when he had that place :)!

Tom, It would have been a disaster.  The more I tried to explain to her, the more upset she got. I finally figured I'd let the husband handle it after i left!

HI Sharon, I was caught off guard, that's for sure.  I (obviously) wasn't called back to this home.

Hannah, We had the same heatwave and a lightening storm tonight (which was actually beautiful).  I thought we would get a storm but it passed us by.

I can't imagine a bathroom opening into the kitchen. in days of my grand parents, the bathroom was not attached to the house. When  I was growing up I was visiting my uncle and we slept in a bedroom with an attached bathroom and I could not bear to be sleeping close to a bathroom.

Hi Carole,

A bathroom off the kitchen??!! Someone has rocks in their head...I am sorry but that is the way I see it. I would never even buy a house with a bathroom off the kitchen just the smell of it errrrrr I mean thought of it is enough to turn me off!! I sure hope the clients didn't do it. As I am sure she will regret it later if she did.

Eeew, for many reasons I don't think you want a bathroom in the kitchen. Sounds like very strange advice from a feng-shui consultant. I hope they listen to you, and common sense, and don't put their bathroom off the kitchen.

Gita, I know.  It's almost common sense to me and of course has Feng Shui principles.  I tried very hard to explain to her WHY she should not do that and clearly it became an argument for her and her husband.

Trace, It is always SO NICE to see you!  I love that you still come on here occasionally and wish you were on more.  I hope you are well and very, very happy!

Kevin & Monica, She had it stuck in her head before I arrived...Funny that the one house I DID see it in wanted (of course) to have it changed and they did so as soon as possible.  It's often difficult to get through to some people.

Robert, Thanks for stopping by....I don't believe you'd find this issue in many homes today thank goodness!
