Interestingly, the National Fire Safety Association continually reports that smoking is the #1 cause of deaths and injuries from fires in the home, with kitchen fires coming in second.

Also interestingly, whenever there's a fire in the paper, the cause is never reported as smoking or kitchen fires. I'm wondering if the smoking and kitchen fires cause more deaths and injuries but don't actually destroy the building so that it makes the news headlines or the newspapers.

One of the most common causes of fires that makes the headlines are these:

Candles are a major cause of house fires

A recent fire at a condominium complex in Del Mar was blamed on an unattended candle. The fire damaged all six condominiums in the three-story building, and one person was hospitalized with burns. It took dozens of firefighters ninety minutes to get the fire under control.

An October 2007 report from the U.S. Fire Administration's National Fire Incident Reporting System and the National Fire Protection Association's annual fire department experience survey estimated that candles were the heat source in about 20,900 reported home structure fires per year from 2000-2004. They caused 200 civilian deaths per year, 1,790 injuries per year and $459 million in property damage, per year. Over one third of the fires started in the bedroom, with over half of them resulting because the candle was too close to flammable objects, such as curtains and towels.

Candles being used as a light source pose a greater risk of fatal fire.

If you love candles, and I'm one of them -- those in the picture are mine -- give yourself a Whack! upside the head every time you light one and look around to make sure that the flames are not near any flammable materials.

Another thing I've found useful is to set the alarm for when I want to put out the candles so that I don't go to bed with one accidentally list. You can use either the bedside alarm or the alarm on your cell phone.

What? You didn't know your cell phone has an alarm? How do you think I take cat naps?

When I was a teenager a guy I knew caught his house on fire with a candle.  It was put out before the whole house was lost, but it was a terrible mess and I've always remembered that.  Candles make me nervous but I love them.

That lazy lizard is hilarious!

Russel, I didn't know the statistic of fires and candles were so high.  I will be more careful although I think I am I will take even more care.  I usually use those glass container ones.  But what amazed me is I will bet that the people who started the fires with their candles did not intend to have it go out of control.  6 condominiums because of one candle....awful!   Cat naps?????   So that's how you stay up all night blogging?

Hi Russel ~ I had a run-in with a tenant after I discovered he was sleeping on the back porch with a candle for light.  I called the local newspaper's archives and got a copy of the edition from the month before that had a picture of an absolutely horrific fire on the front page. The fire had been started by a tenant's candle on the porch and the woman upstairs died in the fire.  My tenant tried to fight with me about it and after he moved out I found a burn mark several inches long on the porch floor.

I really prefer to ban candles in my rental - you can police your own behavior but you can't be sure that your tenants will always act responsibly.  Going without candles is not a big deal IMO (and if it is to you - buy a house and light it with candles if that's what you want!).

Russell: They have had a number of fires in San Antonio this year from candles that were left unattended or knocked over. Also with kids playing matches. I think right now folks are using more candles to cut down on the electric bill since the cost of electricity has gotten so expensive.

Wow. I'm sort of surprised at this, but it does make sense. I went through a candle phase a few years ago, and had them burning all over the house. I always made sure they were all blown out before I went to sleep, but it still would have been for one to cause a fire in another room, when I got busy in my home office. However, I do tend to burn the tealights and other small ones that are in pretty glass candle holders, instead of the pillar candles. But with 2 cats, anything can happen! I'm back on my incense kick now ;-)  And my Lampe Berger scents are always a safe bet =)

Hey, Ann - I also like candles, a lot, as did my wise old grandmother. The selection we have today, even in places like Kmart and Walmart, and awesome and I just have to learn to stay away from the candle aisles. Glad you like Larry the Lazy Lizard.

Hey, Jane - I thought you knew about my cat naps.

Hey, Liz - Rather than trying to ban candles, which would be difficult to enforce and might cause some tenants to light them - and leave a few burn marks here and there - just to spite you, try helping them by requiring them to carry personal effects insurance. That way, if they burn down your house, your insurance will pay for it, but then you and your insurance company can go after their insurance company for your deductible, and possibly all of the cost of rebuilding.

Hey, Carl - We had a rash of candle and match fires here back in 2000-2001 when Enron was manipulating the energy markets and the cost of electricity climbed sky high.

Hey, Lisa - I have a friend here, who is a Realtor, who has a beautiful Craftsman Cottage of about 900 square feet. I think 899 square feet are full of candles. I've never seen so many candles in one place in all my life, even in candle stores. And when he has a party, every candle is lit. It takes him about three hours just to light the candles, but it does make for a great party.
