Those of us who watch the events unfolding either at Tea Parties or Town Halls see an increasing agitation and frustration. Constituents are growing more vocal as their ire is fueled by Washington ignoring the will and voice of the people.
The same type of passion exploded during the Viet Nam protests in the 1970's. Eventually frustration on both sides escalates and can lead to violence. Kent State was a prime example of this.
Recent union involvement by physically removing a protestor is a sign that more of the same is coming. It is only natural; when some people are pushed they push back harder. Mob mentality may severely negate any progress we make getting our position heard. We need to use a powerful message and make sure it is covered by the media. Peaceful, committed, steadfast and a consistent widespread protest is what we need to do.
Instead of shouting we need to make a clear statement that is resounding, unified and unmistakable. We need to deliver that message visually and silently. The end result will speak volumes.
Here are my suggestions to make the most impact out of the meeting and visually get the message across. Each attendee brings a placard or sign. 8x10 poster board is sufficient. One side printed with a huge YES and one side with a huge NO.
Each attendee writes a letter to the legislator hosting the meeting before attending. Identify the house bill or bills you are for or against. If you are against the bill continue by telling the law maker that should they ignore your voice and vote in favor of the bill, you will work as hard as you can to see they are unseated in the next election.
Amongst yourselves prior to the meeting agree that you will make your protest visual and without yelling and screaming. Listen to the presentation silently and respectfully. Whoever in the group can get the floor during the Q&A should initiate a poll of the audience
The member of your group should ask the audience to show their vote by turning their placard. The audience should raise high the appropriate vote they wish to cast. YES OR NO! Turn to the legislator and tell them to start counting and make a written record of the vote. The vote should be used in combination with other votes the legislator has received. Those communications are the will of the people.
IT IS THE JOB OF THE LEGISLATOR TO VOTE ACCORDING TO THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE.
The attendees may wish at that time to leave and not engage in further Q&A which just leads to heated exchanges. Go out single file past the Dias and drop their written letter in front of the legislator. Make your point and leave the legislator looking at an empty room. Move to the outside and protest by showing your vote till the legislator leaves.
We need to avoid having our will dismissed as a bunch of disgruntled conspirators instigated by the Republican Party.
Organize your friends to attend tea parties and town hall meetings. Participate in Patriot marches. Organize pickets whereever your law makers live, work or congregate. Do so peacefully but aggressively by virtue of sheer numbers.
Our history shows that massive protests during the civil rights movement and the Viet Nam War brought about significant change to our country. Learn by out past to peserve our future.
THIS IS THE KIND OF CHANGE WE CAN MAKE HAPPEN!
