Neither did I. The historical fact is written on the Bronze plaque just below the statues at The University of Portland.

That Clark freed his slave York is disputable. In Clark's letters to his brother after the expedition, Clark claims to have offered York his freedom, but York decided ultimately he didn't want it. Why York wouldn't want his freedom, after a very tumultuous relationship with Clark post-expedition, is neither logical nor reasonable.
