My real estate training now includes diet and exercise.  To work the many hours and perform at the highest level, it requires being in good health.

My day today began at the Mililani YMCA at 6:00am.  Stretching, lifting weights and a nice ride on the stationery bike got me ready to hit the day.  I am sure that some of you started your day in a similar manner.  Until recently the thought of getting up and sweating in the gym was a foreign idea to me.

Last summer I had hit a danger point.  Topping the scales at close to 400 lbs (even at 6'4" that is huge):

  • I was breathing hard just from walking up a short flight of stairs.
  • I suffered with severe acid reflex.
  • I had chronic sleep apnea so bad that the doctors wanted to put an oxygen tank hanging on a C-Papa machine on me.
  • The final straw was the day the doctor diagnosed me with diabetes.

I knew I had to do something drastic.  I immediately went on a strict diet supervised by a doctor and a dietician.  Since last summer I have lost enough weight to make another person.

                                                             Randy - Before and After

Here is the real point of where I was going with this post.  To be at your best, you need to be in good physical condition.  It will allow you to do a better job at real estate and your personal life.  By improving my health and losing all the weight, I have seen a huge improvement in my energy and concentration.  Potential customers respond to me in a much more positive way and I have a better attitude towards myself and my business.

My wish for all of us in our Active Rain family is you take a little time each day for yourself.  Please take care of your health.  Please do not wait like me until the doctor scares you into doing something positive.  Just remember why we are in this business; it is to improve our family's lifestyle.  Your health is as important as growing your business to do that.

So lace up those sneakers, grab a bottle of water and enjoy a good walk or a visit to the gym.

Aloha from sunny Hawaii.

Congratulations on the weight loss Randy and keep up the good work. It doesn't matter how much money we make or how great our lives are if we're not in good health to enjoy it. Thanks for posting this!!

Randy,

I congratulate you for taking a pro active stance with your health.  I know it's not easy---in fact I haven't been at the gym all week.  But, I'm heading there this afternoon.  Keep us posted about your progress.

Aloha Randy!  Oh my God... major CONGRATS on your success!  That's excellent.  I know I should be exercising but it's still just a thought in my head right now.  I huff and puff at the top of the stairs too.  :(  I reason with myself saying that it's because I'm 40.  Noooo.... I know it's really because I'm out of shape.  Maybe your energy will rub off over the internet.  :)

Good post, hopefully it will inspire us.  Now you're really "Not just another pretty face!"  :)

Great job, Randy. I need to take that to heart. I spend so much time working and I know I am neglecting the health side of the equation. Keep it up.

Venice - It was hard for me to get started.  I have been saying for years I need to do it.  It took a lot to get me started.  Now that I am finally in the routine I have to keep pushing every day so I don't slip back.

Stephanie - I have always had a problem with taking care of myself.  It is easy to blame my busy schedule.

I finally found my slot.  6:00am at the YMCA is great.  It is a middle age crowd, not many people and I get in and out without affecting my schedule. It also starts my day off in a good way.

Randy, I noticed your picture had changed and it was like half of you melted away.  I know it's hard work.  Good job.

I invested in the Nike+ shoes & an iPod.  There is a computer chip in the shoe that measures your distance, calories burned and time.  It's all save on the iTunes program and Nike+ website.  It has been a great motivator for me to keep moving.

Go, Randy!  Go, Randy!  :oD  Excellent work and I'm glad you're sticking with it. I don't spend nearly as much time at the gym as I should.

You are so right... I always went to the gym, but when I started to really get busy, thats the first thing that I pushed off...   Now I'm Back... and you know what, I feel better than ever.  I go in the morning before work and the whole day I feel energized and less stressed, then at night I actually find it easier to wind down and sleep well.

Keep up the great work!

Thanks for the post

Welcome to the diabetic club. You are doing the right thing. Keep up the hard work. The before and after pictures are a great comparison. You do look healthier and younger may I or my wife added. Good for you, for making this effort.

Randy,

That is absolutely wonderful! (is this why you related to IZ?:)  I never would have known though, since it was a face photo. So it took some courage to write this post.

I know, from experience that its a lot of hard work to diet and excersise, and some days you just feel like, "why do I bother"?  I also was diagnosed with diabetes three years ago. And, like you, I had to go to a dietician and "change my ways".  I remember being quite shocked about it, like, not me!!!  Anyways to make a long story short, I lost 43lbs, (I only needed to lose 30) but I got a little obsessed with it and people started telling me I looked gaunt. Which I was taking as a Compliment!!  I no longer have diabetes, though, it was purely from my weight.

So congrats on what must have been a long, tough process and keep up the good work, you will only feel better!

Randy,

Way to go!  I find with our crazy schedule it seems like some days there is never time to exercise.  Ok, let me be real, we never make it our priority.  I am not a morning person so 6am is not going to happen for me.  I tend to go walking at night instead, last night I was out walking from 10:00 - 11:30.  Not an exciting Friday night but I needed to get my walk in because I missed a couple of days this past week.  Thanks for the inspiration!  Keep up the great work.

Mahalo, Randy, for this inspiring post. Especially in the islands where the sticky rice and the manapua man deliveries are hard to resist. As the momma of four babies, I know what a feat it is to get that unhealthy weight off - we are trying to be super models - just alive! Great Job!!

Randy you are so right - we often neglect ourselves for our family and our clients - bottom line though - if we do not take care of ourselves we can not take as good of care of those we want to help -  keep up the great progress - I am learning - eating and exercising is tough to fit in but I am getting there - 10 lbs in 2 weeks - of course that will slow down - but that is ok... keeping at keeping it off.

Randy. I'm blaming blogging and my addiction for not excercising more! I have cut my crap intake in half (have you noticed?) and will go walk the doggie shortly. I am spending the whole weekend not doing anything but hibernating. Not going in to the office, have everything done for a couple of days with my clients in escrow and set up for client coming in next week. Other than that, I will look forward to pigging out at dinner with our spouses and family (YES, bring the kids!...I'm leaving the dog at home..haha) on Friday....WooHoo! Thanks for inviting us....we fail to socialize as well you know. And once in awhile this should be a given! Hey, bring the camera's and we'll call it the Active Rain Celebration! WooHoo!

Randy-You have definitely made a choice for the better.  I wrote a post back in November about the importance of Staying Physicaly and Mentally Fit.  Not only does it help you to stay in shape, look and feel better but you have a better chance of fighting off sickness and other seasonal colds.

That is a wonderful transformation.  I believe ones health and outward appearance says alot about them.  While some may have health problems that limit their ability, if you are able to exercise, you should.

Fantastic job, Randy!  Congratulations!

I'm down 61 pounds, do exercise 5 times a week and must admit I have much more energy, and no longer fall asleep in a chair at 9 p.m.

I knew I was succeeding when a new client didn't recognize me from my photo and thought I'd sent someone else to show them property!
