I went out to feed the Pelican Bay critters when I arrived at work on Wednesday and was greeted by an old friend, the Great Blue Heron.

She looked a bit frazzled and hungry. She nailed two fish rather quickly, but my camera was in the office.

I looked across the water and saw two ducks swimming my way, at first I thought they were young Muscovy's, but as they got closer I realized they were too pretty.

They came right out of the water, walked around me, then stood behind me looking up towards me like a puppy begging for food. I handed one a cracker and he took it from me, gently. The smaller one was a bit more shy and wouldn't come up to me, I just tossed crackers her way.

Meanwhile the Red-winged blackbirds are flying around in a craze, they don't like all these birds around their tree. I felt like I was in a nature movie.

I went inside and grabbed my camera, these duck like creatures were beautiful, I wanted photos. I went back out with the camera and they came running towards me, again like a puppy. I think the camera scared them, when I raised it to my face, they both stopped. It was cute.

We made friends again quickly though, I was able to hand feed both creatures by the time our photo session was over. I was just taken by their colors and gentleness.

I noticed they didn't look like a typical duck, small bills & longer legs then ducks. Everyone at the office commented on how pretty they are, but no one knows what type of water foul they are.

This morning I was looking at some archives of footage from a watering hole in Africa and there, in living color was my mysterious duck! An Egyptian Goose. I thought, no way, that's in Africa, that can't be the same animal.

Steve and I researched the Egyptian Goose, we found photos, yep I took photos of Egyptian Geese! We also learned they aren't even supposed to be in the United States, (except a few at zoos), let alone Daytona Beach. Some in California seemed to have escaped captivity and live on a pond. Two were spotted in New Jersey. These birds are from Africa and also reside in England.

What are these two lovely geese doing so far away from home? How did they end up at Pelican Bay in Daytona Beach, Florida? I'll never know the answer, but I am so glad I got to meet and photograph them.

Wow, Lysa!!  That is so cool!  You must have been so surprised to see them in Africa!  LOL!  They look so interesting, with their short beaks and eye patches.  Your blog is like an educational visit to the zoo sometimes!  Love it!

Sarah, For some reason I had a feeling I would find the answer at the watering hole. Whatbird.com didn't have them listed, that's usually a sign they aren't from the U.S. I'm glad you enjoyed your visit! Keep watching, one for Tall One is in the works :)

Bryant, Thanks! I thought you would enjoy these shots. I wonder where they came from too and how did they get here? You're so right about living in Florida, "It doesn't get much better then this!"

Hi Lysa...

I gotta chime in here with WOW. This could be like the giant parrots we see flying around. Funny how these birds just show up.

Like you said "it doesn't get much better" :)

By the way I love that link you gave me to Africa...Way cool :)

TLW, Thanks! I would love to see those parrots, wow how cool! I've heard about them, but have only been south of here once. Maybe one day I'll get to the Keys!

It really doesn't get much better does it? The simple things here in Florida are what makes a lot of us smile and that's all we need.

Enjoy your journeys in Africa! Sarah and I are addicted :)

Very nice duck, duck, duck, goooose!! :)   Lysa,i loved the pics. reminds me of 'my ducks'. There was / is  a spot in Ft. Lauderdale that I would visit after just about every surf session. Frist i'd stop for a drink of water t the 7-11 and then hang out at this spot where the ducks congregate. Feed em, watch am and tell them about my surfing experience. they always listened! haha!! :)) thanks for the story :)

We get the green parrots in my old golfing grounds but those ducks with the red were a nuisance...we had to have them removed because of to many poops and they were getting to peoples garbage..but in my new neighborhood we have no problems...we used to call them the radio active ducks because they were so weired looking..the others are very cute though.

Neal, you're right, radio active does fit the Mucovy's! How funny! I hear they like the golf course, wonder why that is?

Maggie, Thanks! It was awesome :)

WOW!

That is awesome!  Wonder if you should let the Fish & Game folks know so they can track them.  Wouldn't it be neat if they were to have babies there???

As I looked at the first photos of your post I thought, gee they don't look like ducks! They look more like geese. They are absolutely beautiful.  Do you think they were friendly because they belonged to someone in your area and got lose?  What a shame.  I worry about such beautiful birds being loose with some of the crazies out there that like to shoot just for the fun if it.  Thanks you for sharing these beautiful photos of such amazing birds. :)  You are a great photographer.

Roberta, My mom noticed they were "different" looking when I sent her the photos. I thought maybe they were wood ducks. The more the photo's went around and no one knew what they the more I thought this was strange. As for them being so friendly? Pelican Bay has a natural canal system around the gated community, I think these two probably get food from the home owners there. Thank you for your sweet compliment!

Hi There Lysa, I love your pics. My Fiance and I have taken several pics of an Egyptian Goose that has been hanging out around our place for the last few months. We had no idea what it was until we did research and after we found out we were quite suprised. We contacted the Florida Wildlife Conservation and they wanted to know where it was so they could list it as another spot they are spotted. We only have one here though and we are in Fort Myers,Florida. It's definitely a great experience. Hope you enjoyed it as much as we did and do. :-) Thanks for sharing the pics.

Hi Krystle, Thanks for stopping by! I'm surprised you only have one? I heard back from the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and they said that my Egyptian Geese were probably pets that got out. I've not seen them since the day I took these photos. I would love to see them again. I did enjoy them.

Debi, Living here I learn more and more about the different birds of Florida every day, finding these two, or them finding me was a stroke of luck. They really reminded me of puppies, I wish they would come back to visit. I'm going to try to hit the beach real early tomorrow to find some rare black skimmers that are causing quite the stir around here.

Miguel, Wow, that would be so neat to see, 10 of them! Did you take photos? I have a feeling they like to "visit" then go back to their "home". I've not seen mine since I posted this blog, and have a feeling they are back home. After all, they were getting free food from me and they never came back. I wish they would tho..
Thanks for stopping by and telling me your story!

There is a pair hanging around Tuscawilla park in Ocala for the last couple of weeks.  I wonder if they were the ones from Daytona?  They are beautiful and seem unafraid.  There is a feedmill across the pond where they hang around and feed with all kinds of ducks.

There are two at Hunters Run in Boyton off cCongress. I also got alot of pictures. I was visiting from Chicago, Had a hard time trying to identify them. The pair appears to be female & male are two very vocal birds. with a very unusual and distinctive call. They are very exciting because they are so unusual

Coconut Creek, FL...A few months ago, 2 Egyptian Geese were living in the lake in back of my condo.  Now we have 10 and it looks like they are here to stay because my neighbor feeds them.  They are beautiful but very noisy!

I saw one last year in New Braunfels, Texas. It was amazing. I wondered if the bird was already settled down in U.S.
