He Shoots He Scores! Exciting wasn't it? Now, how exciting is it to see a slam dunk? Shooting a ball, and slam dunking a ball are two different experiences. Have you ever seen a basketball game where one of the players slams a basketball on an opponent? The crowd usually goes crazy, and it's a very exciting experience to see in person.

How does this relate to blogging? It's simple really. If you want to draw attention to your blog, try writing a "slam dunk" post rather then a "layup" post.

Slam dunk

7 Ways To Slam Dunk Your Next Blog Post

1. Write something controversial. The best way to get people excited about your blog, is to write something that not everyone agrees with. Stir the pot, and dive into the conversation.  I like a little controversy, here is an example of a semi-controversial post I wrote:

  • Are Referrals Just A Way To Get A Free Paycheck? This blog I wrote recently, asking people to give a reason why they are worth the money they charge. The response was amazing, and all I did was question someones ethics! :) lol~ Controversial? You bet.

  • Mr. Controversy: Greg Nino - This guy is, well, maybe a little crazy? Controversial? Whatever it is, it works, and he seems to attract a lot of interest.

  • Mrs. Controversy: C Tann Starr - You mess with C,  she will let you know about it, and she doesn't hold back. Scroll through her blog and get a feel for controversy. BTW, she is also a very kind and caring person. If you are her friend, or try to engage her, she will accept you with open arms. :)

2. Write something so helpful, so unique, and with so much content, people can't help but feel wowed. I tried this method, and the result was phenomenal. These posts take heart and time, you really have to put a lot into them, but it's worth it.

  • I wrote one of these posts here: 101 Ideas To Jump Start Your Real Estate Career. Like I said, it's not easy to write something that wows people. I know this post wowed people, because they told me so in the comments. I spent 2 weeks on this post. Was it worth the effort? You bet ya.

  • Also, here is a guy that is dedicated to these posts: Mr. Helpful - A.K.A Brad Andersohn

3. Incorporate "Sexy" into your blog post. Ask any ActiveRainer that put "sexy" into there posts, and I bet they had a lot of interest in it. :) (Keep it clean, sexy doesn't have to be dirty.) Example: Is Your Blog Sexy? Sex sales, and if your blog looks ugly, you will miss the slam dunk.

4. Break the rules. Rules are made to be broken, the very foundation of some of the most influential blogs/bloggers, are there attitudes. They break/set the rules, and people follow. Stand out, break a rule, create a buzz.  Example:

  • Who else other then TLW? The Lovely Wife - TLW is real a marketing gem. Take a look at her style, she is exactly who she is, and she doesn't care if you like her or not. The reason she is so popular, is she doesn't follow anybody. She is so unique in her blogging style, that no one else can compare. She only writes members posts, and she is probably the most well known blogger on A|R. (That isn't a staff member.)

Feeling Inspired?5. Breaking news, new stuff, cool technology, a new way to save time and energy.  People that read blogs like to stay ahead of the competition. Do you know of something that can help people do something easier? Do you have the scoop on a new deal?  Help people, and they will talk about you. Example:

  •  Google Analytics doesn't work with your blogs and I wanted to know my visitors habits. So, I dug deeper to find a program that did work. I found Clicky, and I wrote about it here: What you ought to know about people reading your blog. This blog post is my most popular post I have ever written. It was helpful, and I knew it was something other people might be interested in.

6. Pluck an emotional cord, hit that heart string with your words, and you are on your way to a slam dunk. Do you have a passion? Something you love, or hate so much, it brings tears to your eyes? Chances are, someone else shares the same feelings. Tap into those feelings, and you will have an awesome blog post. Example:

  • People loves them some ActiveRain, and I soon found out just how much. I was new to blogging, and I soon became addicted. So, I poured my heart out into a post on how much I loved this site, and it became clear, I wasn't the only one, the post is here: Addicted To ActievRain - Little did I know, that blog post would be the post that committed me. I wasn't alone, and it made me feel accepted.

  • Please Pray For TLW - This post is a great example of people caring, and connecting emotionally. Everyone has struggled at times in there lives, and we can all relate.  This example isn't meant for you to copy, but rather for you to understand how connecting to people through social media can mean so much.

  • Warning - You can't fake these posts, you really have to put your heart into it. Open up, don't be scared, connect with people on an emotional level, and you will have friends for your entire social media lifespan.

7. Turn the world upside down. It's easy to follow the crowd, writing reports, new listing information, and blah blah blah. We all do it here, it's the reason we use ActiveRain. But you aren't going to turn any heads writing boring market reports all the time. The world isn't flat, and your blog shouldn't be either. Example:

  • William Johnson changed my view on the real estate market. Everyone has been calling it a buyers market, but he suggested that it was a lenders market. Everyone believes it's a buyers market, but their wrong. Read this post:  Sellers Market, Buyers Market or........Lenders Market? - The great thing about this post is, it changes your world view. Christopher Columbus said the world was round, and William Johnson said the market is a Lender's Market.

Do you have posts that were slam dunks? Put your most viewed, most commented, or active post link in

the comments. I want you to show off the posts you are most proud of. This post is to show everyone

why your  blog deserves attention.

Want more readers for your blogs? Want more comments? Are you sick of being in the blog desert?  Well step up, slam dunk your next post, and pull yourself into the spotlight. No one is going to do it for you.

Hi Ron - I like to stir the pot a little, and get peoples brains churning. I am boring with some of my posts, and I think most of us are, but I also try to balance it out with something thats "different".

Hi Jason - Crap is ok, but just don't expect to catch anyones attention with it. If you want to get noticed, or you want to stand out, then get off the bench, and wow people. :)

Hi Lisa. I like TLW's posts. One quality that I like about her is that she does not seem to care what others think about her. Katerina too. I like people who write with candor. Not sure about the controversy thing though LOL... I notice that many controversial posts are read.

BTW thanks for the helpful posts. I bookmark many of them.

I'm not sure that I've had a slam dunk though I've been fortunate enough to have a few featured posts.

I did discover something by accident early on in AR.  Confuse them and make them wonder, and they'll come back for more.  This was done totally by accident when I hadn't learned the difference between draft and public. Lisa, I agree that the emotional chord gets attention but it is a shame that it may be viewed as the ONLY way to get attention. Just because something IS NOT controversial does not mean it is not worthy of reading or appreciating. Are you liking my contrarian view here? I represent the little people LOL. What bothers me sometimes with features or attention is that it goes to the base level of entertainment rather than something meaningful. Kind of like Fox News and a sensationalism story vs. your local story about the good deed done by the girl scouts in raising money to fix the dog's leg that got broken when hit by the car. Entertainment and controversy it seems wins hands down every time. I personally don't think that is right, but we have short attention spans, the need to be voyeurs of exciting things and sex, and juvenile minds sometimes for what gets our rocks off. Just my two cents. I do like your list though and think it is the bullseye of the way the world really works, just not Gary's world.

Lisa -- thanks for reminding us that there's more than one way to write a good post.  Maybe the key is engaging the reader?  I wrote a post a year ago that I thought would get a couple of comments, but was shocked that eventually I had to disable additional comments, there were so many.  What was it about?  How should I stage a kitchen in a foreclosed home where all of the appliances had been stolen?  Silly subject, but it sure drew a lot of great advice.

Lisa- Great post, right up my alley! I am all about transparancy, sticking up for your principles even when it is not politically correct to do so, to speak from the heart and to stir up the pot! I love a healthy debate! Of course I like meaningful posts also. Just because something is controversial does not mean it was not meaningful as well. When you lead with passion, amazing things happen. Passion is meaningful. When I can bring a reader to tears or stir them to smile or even awake their passion- I have done my job as a writer and blogger.:) Katerina

What I love about this post is I am combing through the blogs I have posted. It is important to know your history and thanks for the reminder. I usually don't like some controversial post especially when they are slammers of other people or don't respect difference. I did one political blog but that was about a lady in our legislature that said homosexuals were a greater threat to America than Moslem extremists, that they recruit two year olds, and that they should be eliminated from society like a cancer. Hate speech drives me nuts especially when it implies murder.

Lisa, great stuff, you are such a natural blogger, always love reading you.

I guess my thing is what I would call unintended controversy. I think I am just showing them a little peek inside the mortgage world and the next thing I know....KA BOOM...the comments take on a life of their own.

From 2009: Asking the world if mortgage brokers were going extinct had nearly 9000 views. Coming in close was asking if the $8000 tax credit was a waste of money. Another KA BOOM was when I claimed I was glad HVCC had taken the monkey off my back...on that one, I think people were just eager to vent.

Lisa, not linking, seems like that would be bad blogging manners.

None of these were my favorite post. I guess that would be my very mushy post remembering my romantic experience as a first time buyer   (also written this year).

Hi Joe, and everyone else that commented about controversy. That is the type of thing I am talking about. A lot of you say you don't like controversy, however, you like to talk about it. That right there is controversial! Controversy doesn't have to be politics, or a slam on someone or something.

Controversy means to look at the other side of the fence. Maybe go against the grain a little. Or a topic that people can relate to you, or something you have a strong opinion on. There are many forms of controversy, not just bad, but some posts that create a little heat, bring great ideas, new forms of thinking, and are the building blocks to change.

Without controversy, every one would think the same way about everything, and we would all be robots programmed to follow the pack.  I like to be different, which isn't hard, because it's just being myself, and I know everyone here has there own "self" that they should showcase.

Who cares what people think because you can't please everyone, all you can do is be who you are, and people will like it or they won't.  The ones that don't aren't worth the time to try and please. You should focus on the people who are interested in you being you, and you will be better off for it.

1:16pm • #69
253,278 Points 58 Featured Posts Called Shot Master

Janet is a great example. She had a strong opinion on something, and maybe everyone didn't agree with her on the HVCC post. But you know what? People could understand her point of view, and she was ok with being herself, and sharing it with others. She stirred the pot, but what did she get out of it?

A lot of great conversation, people sharing ideas, and other people sharing their opinions. Which is great, because what are we doing here if it isn't to learn from others, and grow ourselves?

Thanks Janet, and I would recommend everyone read her blog, she is definately a Slam Dunk Blogger! :)

I've thought it over and came up with my all time favorite:

"The Active Rain Bull S--T Bag. Read At Your Own Risk"

The comments are actually waaaaaaaaaaaaaay funnier than the post itself :)

Here's one of my all time favorites written by another Blogger:

"Toilet For Sale. House Comes With It"

Again. The comments are flippin' hilarious :)

Hmmm...Do you see a crappy theme here? :)

TLW...ROAR!

This was interesting for me, Lisa, to say the least.

The post that I enjoyed writing the most was The Beginner's Guide to ActiveRain, which was not featured, but received an almost 75% click through rate...

Then there was Discover the True Power of ActiveRain, which was my second feature...I was really proud of that one...

I was so mad when I wrote Do NOT Be Rude To A Potential Buyer - Even If You Do Have Multiple Offers, that I was sure that it wouldn't be featured...it was, and it has the most comments and the highest click-through rate of any of my blog posts...

But my absolute favorite was a recent one that I wrote - More Than A Realtor...

Thanks for the advice on how to write posts that will really grab readers attention. Much appreciated.
