This past week I have been inudated to give interviews for local, and national media.  One interview would be a live national webinar for a major national news media company, and the other was for a local news complete with a TV camera interview.  Now I have given many radio, television, and newspaper interviews in the past, but the prospect of these interviews did not sit well with me.  The topics included short sales, and the other was for my take on specific subdivisions that have failed in my area and the collateral damage that those failures have caused in my community.  The failures and collateral damage in my opinion were already self evident in the economy.  So in both cases I declined the interview.  I decided to check my ego at the door and said "No" to one, and did not return the calls of the other.  I did not see the point in doing either one.  Life is too short.

First of all I have always listened to my instincts, and I have always made the right choices by the Grace of God.  Short sales is a very painful process for all involved, I personally feel I would not be able to shed light on anything new in that arena.  I empathize with those that are losing their homes, and do not feel like throwing salt into the wounds.  On the other potential interview...I did not want to be the person talking about a failing or failed subdivision.  I beleive there was liability in an interview like that, and bad press for residents that were unfortunate enough to be the first ones to buy a home in that community.  There are so many failed communities that by no means would it make any sense to single out one developement or builder.  It's just a sign of the times, and should have been stopped before it occured.  My own feeling on this second interview was that it would not be beneficial to my business.  Residents would despise my insights, the developers would want to sue me for telling the truth and damaging their non existant sales.  It was the classic "Lose, lose" scenario.

The classic gambit, indeed. Great call. I've ducked a few of these and had people wonder why I blog about anything but wont go on camera to talk about it. I guess I have a measure of control with my serial commenting and I can pick and choose who to answer or engage. Interviews can get messy when there is a negative agenda. :-)

Jim,

Sometimes an interview can go in a direction one does not expect, at that point it is like being in quick sand.

I think you were wise to avoid this interview.  I agree.  Failed subdivisions shouldn't be talked about on TV.

Jim,

Sounds like they already had the story written in both cases and just needed the "local expert" for validation. You're right, why associate yourself and your reputation with that much negativity.

C Tann-Starr (TannStarr.com TannStarr.ws REMAX People Realty)  I agree, but in this case It is not so much the interview that bothered me.  I really felt it was the public that was not best served.

Richard Iarossi, Crofton MD Real Estate, Annapolis MD Real Estate (Long and Foster® Real Estate, Inc.)  I agree. I like to have a bit of a dialog with the interviewer first before I jump into something.  On one, we chatted, and after a while...my own fears were confirmed they did not really want to hear my angle.  So my reply was "No!"  When asked if I knew of any other colleague that would be interested...my answer was "No" again.

Jim, I agree that there's no reason to put salt in the wounds. I don't like hearing about failed subdivisions either. I also feel bad for the people who are living there.

Jim,

Congratulations on getting this type of exposure.  But more importantly I think you are doing the right thing by passing on the opportunities.  These interviews certainly appear to have the potential to negatively impact families.

Well you are probably correct although it would be hard to give up that free advertising. Of course they probably would twist your words to work for what they want.

JIM- Good call- You made a good decision and one which you gace great thought to- when ego supercedes sense nothing good can come of it.  In then end your expertise has greater value when you are not on the bandwagon propagating schadenfreude.

Florida Pines Realty, Inc  Yes, exactly more bad news just for the purpose of putting more bad news in the mix for no other reason than throwing more gas on the fire is pointless.  Yes we all know there is a problem, and that the problem is spilling over into other areas of the economy.  Why rehash it?

Hello Jim, I heard the quote recently: "either you are part of the Problem, part of the Coverage, or part of the Solution; and  the Coverage isn't part of the Solution!" (or, something akin to that).  I see you as part of the Solution.  John

Kudos for surrendering the ego.  You definitely have your community in mind with that type of decision.  If it were January, when things were bleak, maybe a news interview would be worthy.  Things are looking better now and such commentary could slow the community improvement.  I hope your builders and community appreciate you as much as we do.

Jim Valentine (RE/MAX Realty Affiliates)  I think we are all part of this especially in our business.  Builders, real estate agents, brokers, developers, banks and lenders.  We must consider the common good of all.
