Going Green in Los Angeles - Waterless Grass

"LALA Land" (aka Los Angeles) is famous for creating "make-believe" -  but I'm not talking about movie studios and their life-like sets. I'm talking about garden lawn - The artificial kind.

While showing a property in an area adjacent to Beverly Hills, the prospective Buyers commented about how wonderful the grass was growing despite being in shaded areas. Upon closer inspection we realized the grass wasn't grass at all, but rather a grass-like carpet that had been installed throughout the yard.

I've noticed this "waterless grass" is becoming a popular trend in many areas and this "grass-like carpet" is being used on many sidewalks and other public areas. It looks real, wears well, and doesn't require constant watering or mowing. Are you seeing in your area?

I have seen this a little bit.  I really like the idea of it.  No maintenance, no water.  I'm not sure how affordable it is though.

Stewart, It is pricey but it does look good when installed properly. My husband has worked with this product several times with great results, besides it saves resources.

Stewart,

Do you Vacume it or Sweep it?

Hello Stewart, My parents live in Rancho Palos Verdes and installed this about three years ago.  They love it and it looks great.     They will be tickled to hear they were ahead of the curve.

Stewart, while I have never seen it I have read about it from some Realtors in Florida.  Does it look better than astro-turf?  It's still hard for me to accept artificial even though it would be environmently friendly.  It is interesting to see it spreading fairly quickly! (Does your drought help this trend?)

Hi Stewart... I have not seen it in person, but in the pictures it always looks great.  Somehow, though, I am very skeptical about the difference between a photo and the "close-up and personal" experience.

I would think it would get "moldy" after a while, but I love this idea! and yes....what about the pooches?

I have been reading and hearing more and more about this "un-grass".  I know that my grandfather lived outside of San Diego and they use to "paint" their grass - this would have been great for them years ago!

I have seen a few examples....some are really bad, but some are great! I think we get what we pay for.....as usual.

This product is pricey but it does have several benefits.

It's relatively easy to keep clean and can be hosed down.

In reality it does look good.

Steward - yep we are seeing it more and more here in the San Diego area. Some new homes have it installed, and owners are also removing real grass in exchange for the fake. It looks great, is easy to care for, doesn't fade in our SoCal summers, and so on. There are lots of benefits, once you get beyond the idea that it's fake. And with the continuing droguth issues, I bet we will see more and more.

Hi Stewart,

A neighbor and a friend have this in their yards and it is very nice actually.  It is softer than grass too.  Fake grass has come a long way.  It makes good water and maintenance sense.  I have joked about pulling up my friends and sticking it in the yard of the bank owned next store...
