Happy Birthday Tucson ArizonaTucson Arizona was "born" on August 20, 1775.

Here is a little history about Tucson Arizona!

  • Tucson, also called the Old Pueblo, is Arizona's oldest city.  Tucson is an Indian word meaning "place of dark springs" or "springs at the base of a black hill". Around 1900, Americans began to pronounce it "too-sahn".
  • Don Hugo O'Connor, an Irishman, was the founder of Tucson. He was an Irish expatriate hired by the Spanish Empire to upgrade frontier defenses against the Apache and Pima tribes.  Upon entering the territory of Tucson in August of1775, he deemed that it become the Spanish military presidio.
  • Later in the 1850's, travel came by stagecoach and Tucson became the main city between El Paso and San Diego.
  • John Dillinger, the most wanted bank robber in the 1930's, used Tucson as a vacation spot between robberies.
  • The oldest Catholic church still in use is San Xavier del Bac near Tucson. It was constructed between 1783 and 1797.  (insert my post about cycling near San Xavier mission

Gabrielle,

That's got to be one big birthday cake for a whole city. Make sure you get your piece.

I've never had the pleasure of visiting Tuscon, but maybe someday.

Gab, That is very interesting. I love to read the history of places such as Tucson. What do you get an old city for it's birthday anyway? =)
Just a thought,
Paul

Happy Birthday Tucson!  It doesn't look nearly 234 years old!  I have fond memories of Tucson and it's folks from my Air Force days.

Very appropriate post for this day. There is a lot of history here. Some day, I am going to look for something on all of the mobsters that have either lived here or had winter homes here such as the Bonanno's, Giancana's and others such as Pete Licavoli.

HELLO PATRICK!  Oh yes - the "villians"!  There is a guy that works for Tucson Police that has the entire history - if you are interested in talking to him - let me know! -- Gabrielle

HELLO GABE!  Thanks for adding it up for me!  You would probably really like DMAFB these days - many changes but they still have one of the best views of the mountains! -- Gab

HELLO PAUL!  Hmmm ... I'll probably go for a walk around the streets and pick up some litter to help keep it clean! -- Gab

HELLO RICH!  Any excuse for cake and I'm there - and if you ever come this way - make sure it's in the winter! --- Gab

HELLO LEOLINDA!  Wow - I bet that was something!  Thanks for sharing that with us! -- Gabrielle

HELLO KAREN!  It doesn't have all the things a big city offers - but it sure does offer a whole lot more in other respects - many of what you mentioned. Even though it's "frying eggs on sidewalks" time, the weather is still a huge reason why people live here!  Thanks for your note! -- Gabrielle

Gabrielle, very informative post. I always have a great time on Mt. Lemon. My wife taught me to ski there and I subsequently taught my kids. I hate to admit it but after 35 years of living here I didn't know what Tucson meant until now.
